Women's Golf News

As you can see from the title, I am trying to be positive, and send positive thoughts and songs out into the ether and beyond, to get some sunshine in the Southern Highlands. Windy conditions would also be fantastic, but I don't want to appear too greedy!!
HOWEVER, we are able to play some golf on our new 9-hole DRY RED COURSE.
Well done Jane Clifford on being the winner of last week's competition in naming the new course. Jane won a bottle of DRY RED WINE!!
Thanks to all of you who sent in entries - some of the suggestions were very amusing.

C.S.G.A VETS DAY @ GOULBURN
A number of Bowral girls went down to Goulburn on Monday to play in the above event. By all accounts it was a great day and lovely to play on a dry course!
Well done to the C.S.G.A in organising the event, and thanks to Goulburn GC for hosting.
Our ONE winner for the day was Penny McKenna, who was Runner-Up in Division 2 - congratulations Penny!

The new 9-Hole competition is proving to be very enjoyable, and more and more women are coming out to play!
PLEASE PUT YOUR NAMES DOWN ON THE BOOKING SHEET - EVEN THOUGH IT'S A COMPETITION, IT IS NOT HANDICAPPED, SO TREAT IT AS A SOCIAL ROUND. Believe me, it's very sociable - lots of laughs, "gimmes", and some terrific scores!! The scones, coffee, chips, glass of bubbles back in the Clubhouse make it all worthwhile - as Pam Barker can attest to on Thursday!!

What a treat for us to have our wonderful Regina offering Takeaway meals every day!! I can't wait to sample the Beef and Guinness Casserole!
The Takeaway meals will be available from Friday June 10th - just in time to stock up for the Long Weekend! Thanks Regina.

At the moment, we are keeping all Trophy Events and Medal Rounds as in the calendar. Of course, this is a moveable feast; but your Match Committee are keeping a close eye on upcoming events and trying to find alternative arrangements. We will keep you posted - rest assured! It has not been an easy year for anyone, but hopefully the worst is behind us - fingers crossed!

As you are aware, we are only playing Stableford Competitions on the Dry Red Course until 11th June. Hopefully, if the course has dried out substantially, we will be playing our first 18-Hole Comp on Tuesday 14th June.

Due to the course being so wet and the greens so soft, divots and pitch marks are very common at the moment.
Please repair your divots, by replacing turf and scattering with sand. Level out the sand so that it is not piled too high.
When repairing pitch marks on the green, please follow the following guidelines.

Well how about this? 15 gals played golf yesterday on a not too soggy course!
The new 9-Hole WET course ...... (we have to come up with another name for the course!!) proved pretty good in most places. A few of the players posted some terrific scores - Leonie Poulton winning on a countback from Barb Clayton with 17 points. Well done to you both.
Virginia Wozniak won the Pro Pin - taking home $27.50 for her efforts.

You will have read the couple of emails from Kevin and myself re only having Stableford competitions until, and including, the 11th June.

FUN COMPETITION..... We need a NEW name for the WET Course. We are playing off the RED markers so the name has to include the word RED.
Please submit your entries, via email, to me by Wednesday 25th May.
On Thursday we will judge the hundreds of entries submitted and announce the winner on Thursday 26th May after golf. A special prize will be awarded to the winning entrant.

From the President

It is with regret that I need to inform you that the 2022 Vice Captain, Jill Malone, has resigned from the Women’s Committee owing to her changed personal circumstances. I would like to thank Jill for the time she gave to the committee and wish her well. We will still be seeing Jill on the golf course when the weather and her circumstances allow.
Committee member Ellen Goodwin has kindly offered to step into the Vice Captain role and we thank her for her generosity in assuming this responsibility alongside her role as Veterans’ Coordinator.
We are all looking forward to better weather and playing some golf, even if restricted to the ‘Wet’ course.

• Bunnings – During my travels on-line I came across what I think is a great little 60 x 50 glass top rattan coffee table .  I think this would be hard to beat for your patio or even as bedside tables.  Look up Home Bazaar Bali coffee table $32.  A little beauty!

 

• Aldi – Just new are the famous chocolate McVitie’s Digestive biscuits in ‘Thin’.  They certainly are thin and very presentable at the finest morning tea. I like the dark choc ones. I’m yet to see them anywhere else but Aldi.

 

• Reject Shop -  You may remember one of my first Winners was a little miracle sponge called an Eraser Sponge by Chux.  Well what I failed to tell you was that they are incredible for cleaning shower screens and many other things that are troublesome to clean.  The Reject Shop sell them as well and call them 6pk Cleaning Eraser. They really are an unusual item and I know you will be amazed at their ability to clean surfaces. Great for tradies too who just love to leave hand marks on walls!

Don’t spend too much time cleaning though as golf is back on!

RULES QUIZ
The following Rules Quiz certainly got the old grey matter working overtime a couple of weeks ago at one of our Virtual Golf sessions.
I am being a little optimistic, in thinking that we won't be having too many more of these days - we will be out playing golf instead, so I thought you could have a go at the remaining questions at home - good luck!!

Here's hoping that we have turned the corner weatherwise, and our course continues to dry out.
We are hoping that from the week beginning 30th May, we can start playing both 9 and 18 holes - please keep an eye on the Booking Sheets and the Blog. In the meantime, enjoy those extra shots that we are receiving by playing the "Wet" Course!!

Even though we haven't played golf, it's been a busy week rescheduling events, matches etc. So many apologies for the number of emails I have sent out - we have to communicate somehow, as we are not seeing each other face-to-face.!!
We did manage a little bit of face-to-face yesterday with the Virtual Golf at the club - thanks so much for turning up and supporting the club.
Well done Helen Egan in winning the Par round with a wonderful score of -30 (yes I know that's impossible, but that's what happens in Virtual Golf!). Helen wore wellies on her round, and, unfortunately, according to Helen, they are still in the rough on the 18th!!!!!

On Monday and Tuesday we had 8 lovely gals from Roseville GC visiting Bowral. They DID play 18 holes on Monday, and even though they were covered in mud, all had a great time.
Golf was cancelled on Tuesday, but Di Lindsay and I met them for coffee before doing a bit of retail therapy - what else can you do in the rain?
We have decided to hold an annual event, The Rose Bowl, each year between the Roseville girls and the Bowral Girls. First match is in November - stay tuned for more information.

The VWGA Tournament @ Bowral has attracted a wonderful number of entrants. 106 women have booked into the event which is being held @ Bowral GC on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th September 2022.
A HUGE thank you to Ellen Goodwin for organising the event.
THE EVENT IS NOW CLOSED FOR ENTRIES.

Unfortunately, the events scheduled to be played next week will NOT go ahead, due to the course conditions.
As of today the course is closed until Wednesday of next week, and who knows what is going to happen thereafter.

The Match Committee will be on the front foot next week trying to reschedule the postponed events. At this stage, the Medal Round will NOT go ahead next Thursday, 19th May. As always, we will let you know when the course is open and when we can play 18 holes!

Well a very Good Morning to you all! Hasn't it been a glorious week weather-wise, even though we had our first taste of Winter yesterday morning with a sprinkling of Jack Frost??
BUT - the best news is I have my laptop back, so there will be plenty of photos on this week's blog and Whittaker's Winners are back!
Even though we have only played a 9-hole comp this week, it was reasonable fun on Tuesday after we aquaplaned the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes! However, as Dave said in the Captain's blog - Matt has done a fantastic job with the greens - thanks Matt and his team.
I am sure that very soon the course will be back to pristine condition, as it was back in November 2021 when the following photo (16th Fairway) was taken ...... remember those days?

Due to the recent course conditions, several Trophy Events and Medal Rounds have had to be rescheduled - please check the calendar and fixtures on the Club's website.
We have also re-jigged the Knockout Schedule as, with more rain due next week, it is doubtful that we will be able to play our Challenge Bowl and Jubilee Foursomes Matches by the end of May. Please click on the link below to view the new schedule or look on the locker room noticeboard.

BOWRAL/GOULBURN SHIELD
This much anticipated event is now being held on FRIDAY 3RD JUNE AT GOULBURN GOLF COURSE.

PENNANTS
It is with much sadness, that I have to announce that our BRONZE SHEILA BEAUTIES came second to Royal Canberra G.C in their Semi-Finals at Belconnen yesterday. The girls have done SO well this year, and are to be congratulated on their success in the 2022 season. Every week they have driven down to Canberra and represented Bowral Golf Club splendidly - well done to you all.
The 2022 Sheilas were Jane Clifford (Pennant Captain), Sue Flaxman, Emma Fernandez, Sally-Anne Ferguson, Ellen Goodwin, Jill Malone, Kate Wegmuller, Jan Tuite and Andrea Tomlin.

The Plate Team played at Yowani yesterday, also playing against Royal Canberra who are coming 1st on the points table. It was such an enjoyable day, but sadly we did not come home with a win.
Only one more round to go - next Friday at either Moss Vale or Goulburn - yet to be decided.

What options are available to Committees Once Play Has Been Suspended?
Match Play
In match play, a round should not be cancelled once play has begun as both players in a match are playing in identical conditions, without one player having an advantage over the other. When the Committee has suspended play, they should resume play as soon as it is fair and reasonable to play again. When a match is being played by arrangement and the players have several days or weeks in which to play a match, the players may either resume play as soon as it is fair and reasonable to play again, or they may agree to resume play at a later date. Whether play is being resumed on the same day or another day, it is important to remember that the match resumes play from where it was suspended rather than starting the match again.
Stroke Play
In stroke play there is no set guidance for when a Committee should cancel a round. The proper action depends on the circumstances in each case and is left to the judgement of the Committee.
A Committee should only cancel a round when it would be unfair not to do so. If a small group of players tee off in extremely bad weather conditions, and conditions only get worse as the day progresses to the extent that play is suspended and further play on that day is impossible (and if the conditions the following day when play will resume are ideal), it is only fair that the Committee cancel the round.
It is important to note, when a round is cancelled, all scores and penalties during that round are cancelled, which would also include disqualification penalties. However, if a player is disqualified for serious misconduct (Rule 1.2) or for a breach of the Committee’s Code of Conduct, that disqualification should not be cancelled.
One of the frequently asked questions we receive in Stroke Play is whether a result can be declared if over 50% of the field have completed their rounds?
The answer to this common misconception is no. Even if all but one group in a stroke play competition have completed their round before play is suspended, the Committee should not base a result on the completed scores as all players should have the opportunity to finish their round. Similarly, the Committee should not announce the result based on only 9 holes, say, when the competition was being run as an 18-hole event. Instead, the Committee should resume play at the next available time to achieve a result or alternatively the Committee may cancel the round and reschedule the competition for another date.
For further guidance on Suspensions and Resumptions of play see Rule 5.7 and Section 6E of the Committee Procedures.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• UNIQLO -  It’s getting very close to the "warm woollies time" on the golf course and Uniqlo are always a favourite for their cashmere range of knitwear.  Their basic range  are on sale i.e. crew necks and v-necks for $99.  The ‘middle gauge’ range is about double but still it’s hard to beat. Don’t forget to look at the Heattech range of tops and pants as they too are a Winner for golf.

 

• Bendooley Estate Larder -  I just love the Asian Coleslaw from this terrific speciality deli.  I made the mistake of having the delicious dressing put on it whereas I should have asked for it separately because the very generous ‘medium’ size for $15 was more than I needed and as it was dressed it needed to be consumed the same day! 

 

• Bendooley Estate Larder – I’m sure many of you are familiar with the English Pork Pies.  They are very unusual in that they must be eaten cold!  The pastry is superb and they are not huge but I think you’ll struggle to eat one on your own. I have been addicted to them for years.  An English girl from Paddington, Sue Padget made them from home and built up a very successful business selling for e.g. to  David Jones Food  Hall and other gourmet delis. They still carry her name, Padget’s Pies. I won’t have to wait until I go to Sydney now as The Larder sells them. Fantastic for me!
