Women's Golf News

We are almost there! Regional travel has begun, and from next Monday we can travel to and from Sydney and other Hotspots. It's been pretty tough for some of us not being able to see family, and I hope that all the reunions are wonderfully happy occasions. Won't it be lovely to actually hug once again, rather than Facetime kisses?
We have had a quieter week on the golf course, after the excitement of the Championships last week. However, the fields are still very healthy - 48 women playing on Tuesday on the Blue Course. It certainly is a different game teeing off from the Blue Markers, and course management was high on the agenda.
Even though it is a longer course, the pace of play seemed a tad slower than normal. 4 1/2 hours is a little bit too long for 18 holes at Bowral.
Can I please encourage you to always keep up with the group in front.

• If you've had a tricky hole, and have fallen behind for some reason, hop up to the next tee, rather than waiting for all your group to putt out.
  
• Tee off before marking your card.
  
• Rule 6.4 (RandA & USGA) encourages players to play out of turn in a safe and responsible way to save time and for convenience (Ready Golf).
  
• A player should make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds (and usually less time) after the player is able to play without interference or distraction.
  

The weather has been glorious this week, and the colourful shirts were out in full force, along with shorts, skirts and hats. Umbrellas were up to offer some shade, rather than the rain. Happy Days!!
BOWRAL/GOULBURN SHIELD
Thanks to all the gals who have signed up to play in the Bowral/Goulburn Shield on Tuesday 16th November. Normally we have 12 players from each club, and sometimes it's a struggle to get those 12! At the moment we have 17 women who have put their names down which is terrific. I have emailed the Women's Captain @ Goulburn to see if she can match our numbers, but being a smaller club it might prove difficult. The team will be chosen according to handicaps - 4 X 1st Div, 4 X 2nd Div, 4 X 3rd Div. It's wonderful to have such involvement and participation from you all - THANKS!

CHRISTMAS CHEER & CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS @ HIGHLANDS GC
This day is a long standing tradition in the Highlands. Moss Vale GC, Highlands GC and Bowral get together for a fun social day at one of the clubs. The Champion of Champions - Div 1 & 2 is also highly anticipated.
As we have not been able to hold our Interclub events (Unity Cup & Colin Stamm) this year due to Covid, it would be lovely if we can have as many women members as possible participate in this day. It's on Tuesday 23rd November - sheet is in the locker room.

Well, what a fantastic 3 days of golf we have had in our Championships!
Divisions 1 and 3 were hotly contested by all the players. Division 2 came down to the wire with a 4 hole playoff - how exciting was that!! (Not sure if Jenny and Jill were that excited!).

It certainly was touch and go with the weather - but how lucky were we? Apart from 2/3 holes last Thursday, we played in perfect golf conditions.
A HUGE thank you has to go to Matt Morris and his green staff - the course was in perfect condition - THANK YOU!
Also a big thank you to Tim and Darryl - both in the Pro Shop and the Clubhouse for all their help. The Champagne yesterday was very welcome - Thanks so much!

Thanks also to the Match Committee for their wisdom and help.

It's a busy time of the year coming up in the Bowral Women's Golf Calendar, and looking at the timesheets, the fields are still fantastic. Already there are 48 players down to play next Tuesday!
To encourage our "young" women members, we have the inaugural Women's Lifestyle Cup on Sunday 7th November. It would be lovely if you could play on that day, or just come in to the Clubhouse for the Presentation of The Men's Championship Finals, The Junior Championships and the Women's Life style Cup - a BIG day!!

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

I am hoping that in the next few weeks I can poke around a few more local shops to provide you with a broader selection of Winners as we approach the festive season!  In the meantime I can still rely on some old favourites.

• The Source Bulk Foods – For those of you who are not familiar with this wonderful shop, I suggest you get on to their website and explore the extensive range of produce or pop in and see for yourself.  I bet you leave with at least a bag of nuts.  My favourite are the Salted Caramel Protein Balls which are just what is needed at the 10th Tee!  The choices are amazing and I think you’ll love the glace fruit especially the apricots, think Christmas ham! They are in Springett’s Arcade and their website is [email protected]

 

• HFM – I have recently discovered their Taste Fine Food Company curries that are really worth trying especially the vegetable one and the Rogan Josh.  It can be such a godsend when you just don’t feel like cooking or going out.  You can even do the microwave rice readily available in all the supermarkets. How lazy can we get!!

 

• Aldi – This is a serious winner that is a new product line in the icecream section.  An absolute must after a curry!  It’s an Ice Cream Log called Entertainer by Monarc.  It comes in 2 flavours but I can’t get past the vanilla which  is layered with superfine real chocolate. The icecream quality is divine and I  bet you’ll  stock up on them like I have done.

The 3 Knockout Events are just about at the last stage. The Rosevale Plate, The Barbara McCarthy Memorial Trophy and The Hastings & Meg Clark Trophy have been keenly contested this year and we look forward to announcing the winners at The Annual Meeting on Thursday 25th November.

Another week, another easing of restrictions. Hello from a crazy day in the Highlands - weatherwise!
Yesterday, we had jumpers on, jumpers off. Umbrellas up, umbrellas down. Wet weather gear on, wet weather gear off. It certainly was a crazy day on the golf course. Thunder could be heard in the distance, and, at one stage I thought of "calling the whole thing off!" BUT...... Blue skies appeared, and we all managed to finish off our game in relatively dry weather, with the course/greens playable.
Congratulations to all players!

With the wet weather this week, we really haven't made good use of the Clubhouse. However, it was so lovely to go in after our games yesterday and socialise. It was great to reconnect with Tim, Sally and the rest of the bar staff who gave us a very warm welcome. The new coffee machine and crockery make the Flat Whites and Cappuccinos taste even more delicious!!

34 women took part in the 1st Round of the Championships. Due to the pretty awful weather forecast, 17 women decided not to play.
The 2nd Round will be played on Tuesday, 19th October. The draw is on the computer, again, it is a seeded draw. The 3rd Round will be played on Thursday 21st October  - this time the draw will be seeded in reverse order.
PLEASE put your names down at the end of the field, if you are not in the Championships. There is a daily Nett Event on each day, with a ball rundown.

The Knockout Competitions for Barbara McCarthy Memorial Trophy, Rosevale Plate and Hastings & Meg Clark Trophy are in the final stages.

Only 2 more days to go until we are out of Lockdown - hurrah!! We are all booking hairdresser's appointments, restaurants and looking forward to seeing our families again.

Apart from the wind of late, we have been enjoying some early summer temperatures. Thursday was particularly lovely and the summer golf gear was in abundance on the golf course - see photo below!
The little family of ducks were enjoying a lunchtime swim on the pond on 13th!

An obstruction is either a movable obstruction or an immovable obstruction. If part of an immovable obstruction (such as a gate or door or part of an attached cable) meets the definition of movable obstruction, that part is treated as a movable obstruction.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• Priceline - Summer is not that far away and we already need to think of sun protection.  For several years now I have been using Roche-Posay 50+.  It was recommended to me by a dermatologist for its non-greasy and sensitive skin qualities.  It’s a very light milky lotion that is pocket size and is mess free! Great on ears (blokes take note) and that very vulnerable ‘V neck. Remember to shake well!

 

• Aldi – This is a very hard to get item and it only seems to appear leading in to Christmas.  It is the frozen ‘Honey Roasted Caramelised Parsnip’.  This is a serious Winner from me that sells out very quickly - I’m telling you now so that you can keep an eye on its' availability.  The parsnip is cut length-ways and coated so just put the amount you require in an  ovenware dish without oil  and bake it.  You will be amazed how good it is.  It is in the frozen vegetable section.

 

• Aldi – Another summer essential that is due to appear soon is the Electrolyte Tablets that dissolve in water.  Pop one in your water around about the 15th hole and you are guaranteed to breeze home.

 
 
It’s not long to go now before lockdown ends and the shops re open.  Just think how good it will be to indulge ourselves in retail therapy, the real deal!

Tuesday 5th October - Stableford (IN VERY WINDY CONDITIONS!). Winner was Jan Tuite with 37 Pts. R/U - Jane Whittaker with 34 Pts. These were great scores in such atrocious conditions.
Thursday 7th October - Split 6's. A fun team event played for the first time! Winners with 66pts (c/b) were Ellen Neale & Penny McKenna. Very close R/U's were Ellen Goodwin & Anne Keys - 66pts.

WHAT'S COMING UP?
As you are all aware, the 1st Round of the Bowral Women's Championships is on Thursday 14th October. Thank you to the 51 players who have put their names down to play. The seeded draw went on the computer yesterday afternoon.
If you would like to play on any of the days of the championships, but not actually play IN the championships, please put your name down at the end of the field.

A daily Nett event will be held in conjunction on each of the three Championship Rounds. A ball rundown will also be held.
Please see Terms of Competition on this page or on the Noticeboard in our Locker Room.
After the first round of the Championships, the 2nd Round will also be seeded - by Gross Score. The 3rd Round will be seeded by Gross Score - but in reverse order.

Tuesday 12th October - Stableford - CLUBHOUSE OPEN!
Thursday 14th - 1st Round of Championships
Saturday 16th - Stroke.

The CSGA have cancelled the Canberra Shield - due to be played on Thursday 4th November, and CSGA Gala Day on 18th November.

Another reminder that the Women's Lifestyle Cup is now on Sunday 7th November. Please email/call Kevin Kenny or myself to put your name down to play in this Super Sunday.

Let's hope for fine weather for the Championship Rounds and some great scores.

Hello from a wet and miserable Friday afternoon. Can you believe that it was such a beautiful day on Tuesday when this photo was taken? How lucky were we to play in such perfect conditions.
Not only were we enjoying lovely weather, but the course is in pretty good shape too. Tees, Fairways and Greens have been renovated; Holes 8 & 9 are shaping up pretty well; Lots of run on the course; Some stray dead trees have been removed and, of course, we have the added delight of the Spring blossom to admire.
62 women enjoyed these perfect conditions on Tuesday, and by the look of the results, some great golf was being played.
The course is shaping up beautifully for our Championships, coming up in a couple of weeks. If you haven't put your names down on the sheet in the Locker Room, please do so before THURSDAY 7TH OCTOBER.
Hopefully in a few weeks time we will also be able to have some interaction with other gals/friends/players in the clubhouse.

Last week I mentioned about reading your scorecard before teeing off. The scorecard has the indices for each hole on each of the courses on the left-hand side next to the Par for the hole. The Par/Index for a hole can change on different courses. For example, on the Red Course, Hole 15 is a Par 4/Index 17, on the White Course, Hole 15 is a Par 3/Index 6. The column next to the index shows how many shots you get if you are playing a Stableford Round.

There has been some chatter about where to stand after putting out on the 14th, if playing on a Saturday or in a Medley. Please refer to David's Blog this week for details as to standing in a safe spot. "When a group has putted out on the 14th they will need to stand behind the 14th green while the group on the 14th Tee, tees off.  Then they can proceed down the 15th or to the Red Tees on the 15th". 
We are also having the extra indulgence of playing in 3's and 4's - if double vaccinated). It is so much fun playing in a bigger group, and with our large fields now, the timesheet is not so spaced out. We might even have the extra indulgence of being able to share a bite to eat together in the Clubhouse shortly!

RULES
7.2
How to Identify Ball.
A player’s ball at rest may be identified in any one of these ways:

• By the player or anyone else seeing a ball come to rest in circumstances where it is known to be the player’s ball.
• By seeing the player’s identifying mark on the ball (see Rule 6.3a).
• By finding a ball with the same brand, model, number and condition as the player’s ball in an area where the player’s ball is expected to be (but this does not apply if an identical ball is in the same area and there is no way to know which one is the player’s ball).

If a player’s provisional ball cannot be distinguished from his or her original ball, see Rule 18.3c(2).

7.3
Lifting Ball to Identify It.
If a ball might be a player’s ball but cannot be identified as it lies:

• The player may lift the ball to identify it (including by rotating it), but:
• The spot of the ball must first be marked, and the ball must not be cleaned more than needed to identify it (except on the putting green) (see Rule 14.1).

If the lifted ball is the player’s ball or another player’s ball, it must be replaced on its original spot (see Rule 14.2).
If the player lifts his or her ball under this Rule when not reasonably necessary to identify it (except on the putting green where the player may lift under Rule 13.1b), fails to mark the spot of the ball before lifting it or cleans it when not allowed, the player gets one penalty stroke.

Saturday 25th September - Stableford. 26 women in the field! Winner (c/b) was Barb Mead with a mighty 40pts! R/U was Chris Levy also on 40pts. These were great scores as we did not have preferred lies for the first time in quite some time.
Tuesday 28th September - Stableford. 2nd Rd Donkin Cup. With a fantastic 47pts Ellie Scott was the winner of the daily event. R/U with another fab score was one of our new members - Sue Humphry with 44pts. There were 15 girls who scored between 36 - 40pts.
Thursday 30th September. Stableford. Winner with 40pts was Rosemary Downing, with Anne Keys coming in a very close R/U with 39pts.

The Women's Lifestyle Cup Event has now been moved to Sunday 7th November. Please email/call me if you would like to play on the day with either a Lifestyle or Junior member. It is also the Finals for the Men's Championships so, if we are able, there should be quite a buzz in the Clubhouse in the afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Don't forget to put your clocks forward on Saturday night - Daylight saving starts. This will give us some extra time in the afternoons to practice our golf!!
