Who would have thought that Bowral Golf Course would turn into The Great Bowral Ocean?? Full of fish AND Sharks!! Get out your rods girls and let's have a fishing competition ..... we sure aren't playing any golf!!!
Hopefully, we will be back on the course next Tuesday, but carts are not allowed until Wednesday 31st March.
As mentioned last week, 12 girls were heading to Goulburn to play in the Bowral/Goulburn Shield on Tuesday 30th March. I have just heard that Goulburn GC is closed and will remain closed for a while, as they have been flooded again in the recent rains. So the Bowral/Goulburn Match has been postponed.

NEWS FLASH!!!!!
The Plate Team has beaten Murrumidgee C.C 5/0. How good is that!! Well done Julie Hayden, Leonie Poulton, Barb Clayton, Pam Barker and Suzanne Ayre.
The team drove to Gungahlin Lakes this morning and won all of their 5 matches. Thanks to Pam and Suzanne, who normally play in the Bronze Shield Team, for stepping into the team and playing so well. A wonderful result.
The Bronze Shield Pennant Team did not play this week, but they had a good win at Queanbeyan GC last Friday beating Yowani GC 4/1. Congratulations to Jane and her team. At the moment, Bowral are equal first on the points table with Queanbeyan. WOOHOO!!!!

WHAT'S COMING UP?
The Club Medal R2 and The McLeish Cup R1 have been rescheduled to be played on Thursday 15th April - let's hope the course has well and truly dried out by then.
Thursday 22nd April is a stroke round - The Mabel McKenzie Brooch which is a NSW Vets Event.

WHO'S BEEN WHERE AND DONE WHAT?
NOWHERE, NOTHING, NOWT!!!
Not quite true, we had 26 women at the club yesterday for a bit of lunch, some cards, lots of chat, and some fun with a Trivia Quiz. Pam organised a lucky door prize and the booby prize was won by Carole Turpie. The prize was a beautiful swan rubber ring - very apt for the current weather conditions! Anne Vitou went home with a nice bottle of Champagne!
There was also a Trivia Quiz which seemed to get the brains working in overtime!!
The lucky winners were Chris Hill and Pam Barker (with help from Carole Turpie, Rosemary Downing and Helen Chadwick!). Chris Hill went home with a lovely bunch of flowers.
Two of our new members came for lunch - Heather Wallace and Elsa Zava - it was lovely to see you and we look forward to seeing you both on the golf course. Elsa's daughter Louise and Lizzie Norman were also there.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS.

It’s now time to mention the very special cool climate clothes that are true winners.  It may seem a little premature but you don’t want to miss out.

• ALDI -  Hiking socks hit the Isle of Dreams this week and rest assured they are a great buy. I wear them around the house, with golf shoes on those freezing mornings and of course with the obligatory gum boots that have been used a great deal over the past 10 days.  Beware though, they will shrink in the tumble dryer!
  

• UNIQLO – Always a favourite at this time of the year.  The Heattech fleece turtle neck skivvies (called t-shirts on the website) are so soft and perfect under knitwear for $19.90 and available in great colours.

• UNIQLO – While you are on their website you must check out the Heattech warm lined pants for $59.90. Over the last couple of years I’ve told a lot of girls about these pants. Ideal for very cold golf days or just in the garden. You will want to play golf even if it’s snowing.  A slight change each winter to their design but still amazing and perhaps this year a little more sleeker. Welcome to the Blog everyone! I sure am glad that I'm sitting at home on this gloomy wet day, rather than starting a field of 40+ women in the CSGA Plate at Bowral! It's cold! It's wet! It's dark! It's miserable!
HOWEVER ..... We do have to keep positive - Rain does come to an end. Rain makes things smell fresh. Rain washes away grime. Rain means growth for our plants. Rain enables life. So we should be thankful for the rain ...... but I wish it would end soon!

There was some RADIANCE around last Friday evening, when we held our Meet and Greet drinks night. Around 65 women (including 16 new members and friends) enjoyed a delightful hour or so chatting to new and old friends. There was certainly a bit of glam around, and the noise level was intoxicating! Thanks for coming and being a part of this wonderful club.
Also a big thank you to Kevin, Tim and Brad for looking after us so well.

A lovely coincidence that came out of the night was when our beautiful Gloria Campbell met a 'hopefully' new member (Di Turley), who had played at the same club in Nairobi - what a small world indeed!

WHAT'S COMING UP?
Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Medal Round yesterday due to the weather. It has been rescheduled for next Thursday 15th March. Please check the timesheet for that day.
The Hi/Lo Foursomes is on Tuesday 25th March - weather permitting! There are still a couple of gaps if you would like to pop your name down. Please call the Pro Shop.
On Tuesday 30th March 12 girls are travelling to Goulburn to play in the Bowral/Goulburn Shield. This is always a lovely event in the calendar and we hope to bring the Shield back home with us.

PENNANT NEWS
Both the CSGA Plate team and the Bronze team had wins last week - fantastic girls!
The CSGA Plate had a bye this week, but BOWRAL BRONZE are slogging away down at Queanbeyan as we speak. Hope Jane and her girls are coping with the weather and coming up trumps.

WHO'S BEEN WHERE AND DONE WHAT?
Ellen Neale had a surprise trip to Bowral hospital on Tuesday. Unfortunately, as she was unpacking her golf stuff, the boot of her car came down hard on her head. Luckily Jill Scott was there and whisked her off to emergency, where she had 4 stitches put in. I believe that she now is sporting a black eye as well.

Our very special Anne Vitou has also been in hospital, but is now on the road to recovery. Nothing could keep Anne away from a St Patrick's Day party.....

DAILY RESULTS
There hasn't been much golf played this week, but we did manage to get the Jubilee Foursomes Qualifying Round in last Tuesday. PHEW!
Saturday 13th March - 9 girls played in lovely sunny conditions, and the winner was Jane Kilmister with 37pts. Equal 2nd were Ellen Neal and Pam Barker.
Tuesday 16th March - Jubilee Foursomes. The following 8 pairs qualified for Match Play:-

NEW KNOCKOUT SCHEDULE
Due to the inclement weather, the Match Committee has decided to change the due dates for playing your matches in the Challenge Bowl and Jubilee Foursomes. This will give us all a chance to play our matches in plenty of time.
Please see attached document of the new Knockout Schedule. i will also put it on the noticeboard in the locker room.

RULES
Here are a couple of basic, but important, rules from the R and A website. Most of you now have the R & A App on your phone but if not visit the website www.randa.org
Standards of Player Conduct RULE 1a
Conduct Expected of All PlayersAll players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by:

• Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play.
• Showing consideration to others – for example, by playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.
• Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course.

There is no penalty under the Rules for failing to act in this way, except that the Committee may disqualify a player for acting contrary to the spirit of the game if it finds that the player has committed serious misconduct.
Penalties other than disqualification may be imposed for player misconduct only if those penalties are adopted as part of a Code of Conduct under Rule 1.2b.

Prompt Pace of Play

A round of golf is meant to be played at a prompt pace.
Each player should recognize that his or her pace of play is likely to affect how long it will take other players to play their rounds, including both those in the player’s own group and those in following groups.
Players are encouraged to allow faster groups to play through.
(1) Pace of Play Recommendations. The player should play at a prompt pace throughout the round, including the time taken to:

• Prepare for and make each stroke,
• Move from one place to another between strokes, and
• Move to the next teeing area after completing a hole.

A player should prepare in advance for the next stroke and be ready to play when it is his or her turn.
When it is the player’s turn to play:

• It is recommended that the player make the stroke in no more than 40 seconds after he or she is (or should be) able to play without interference or distraction, and
• The player should usually be able to play more quickly than that and is encouraged to do so.

(2) Playing Out of Turn to Help Pace of Play. Depending on the form of play, there are times when players may play out of turn to help the pace of play:

• In match play, the players may agree that one of them will play out of turn to save time (see Rule 6.4a).
• In stroke play, players may play “ready golf” in a safe and responsible way (see Rule 6.4b Exception).

Every week seems to be getting busier and busier! Trips away. Clinics. Playing at Bowral. Playing in Canberra. Thank goodness we have no time for housework!!
How fortunate are we to belong to such a lovely club and the opportunity to play golf (good or bad)?
Lots of news this week, so here goes........

TRIP TO WOLLONGONG
Due to the Greens being renovated on Monday and Tuesday, a few girls decided to take off to the coast and play golf. They played at Wollongong and Kembla Grange and by all accounts had a grand old time!! Plenty of laughter, wine, food and golf were the order of the day. I popped down briefly on Tuesday to play golf with them and to check that they were behaving in a manner becoming of a BGC member. I can report that all was fine!!

The next Greens Renovation is happening in September and I think it would be fabulous if we had a WHOLE CLUB excursion to another club. Ellen and I are onto it! Stay tuned!

PENNANTS
The Plate team (Virginia, Leonie, Julie, Netti and Annie) travelled to Federal Golf Course yesterday for our 2nd Match of the season. We played Gunghalin Lakes and WON!!! The result was 3 -2. Well done team!!
Federal GC was a delight to play on .... those couch fairways!! Loads of kangaroos and gorgeous scenery did not interrupt our concentration.
Thank you to Kevin Kenny for giving the pennant teams another clinic on Monday - even though it was slightly interrupted by a downpour! Obviously your wise words are helping Kevin!!

DAILY RESULTS
Apologies from last week's Blog - I omitted this very important part, so here are last week's results and this week's.
Tuesday 2/3 - Ellie Scott was the outright winner with a tremendous score of 44pts! R/U was Chris Levy with 37pts. NTP - Janet Dunn.
Thursday 4/3 - The Div 1 winner was Sue Flaxman with a huge 40pts, R/U - Jill Scott with 34pts. Div 2 winner - Beth Chambers with a great score of 37pts, R/U - Penny Cuffe with 36pts. NTP - Div 1 - Chris Hill, NTP Div 2 - Robyn Foster. Pro Pin - Annie Geddes. Robyn is one of our new members - watch out girls!!
Saturday 6/3 - Winner with a nett 76 (c/b) was Susan Harrison.

Thursday 11/3 - 1,2,3 Countdown team event was won by Team Neale, McMurray and Kilmister with 77pts. Close on their heels was Team Levy, Grant and Scanlan with 76pts. NTP - Barb Clayton. Pro Pin - Chris Hill.

WHAT'S COMING UP...
On 23rd March is the Hi/Lo Foursomes - there are still some gaps to fill so please pop your names down by next Thursday - 18th March.

We also need some high handicap players to play in the Bowral/Goulburn Shield @ Goulburn on Tuesday 30th March. This is a lovely competition to play in and we need 12 players from all 3 divisions. If you haven't put your name down on the sheet in the locker room, and want some more information regarding the event, please give me a call.

The 2nd Medal Round and Round 1 of the McLeish Cup is on next Thursday 18th March. The McLeish Cup is the Captain's Trophy and has 3 rounds like the President's Cup. It is a stroke event.

Hopefully you all have the R&A App on your phones - you just never know when you are going to need to check a ruling when out on the course. Just yesterday I needed to check a ruling in my Match Play as my opponents caddy's phone went off as a shot was about to be played. It is never easy to be the "dobber", but we have to follow the Rules of Golf. I certainly felt uneasy pointing out the error. So, if you see anyone doing the wrong thing, usually a genuine mistake, please point it out to him or her, or contact me.
If you witness accidental dodging of the rules (or a misunderstanding of the rules), it should be easy to point out the mistake and the individual concerned ought to be thankful for the correction.
If you witness a deliberate dodging of the rules in competition you owe it to the field to take action: Either to confront the individual at the time, to refuse to sign his/her card (and to explain why) or to make the club (Captain) aware of the incident.

The following Rule is an easy one to miss!!

Penalty for Lifting or Deliberately Touching Ball or Causing It to Move - Rule 9
If the player lifts or deliberately touches his or her ball at rest or causes it to move, the player gets one penalty stroke.
But there are four exceptions:
Exception 1 – Player Allowed to Lift or Move Ball: There is no penalty when the player lifts the ball or causes it to move under a Rule that:

• Allows the ball to be lifted and then replaced on its original spot,
• Requires a moved ball to be replaced on its original spot, or
• Requires or allows the player to drop or place a ball again or to play a ball from a different place.

Exception 2 – Accidental Movement Before Ball Is Found: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move while trying to find or identify it (see Rule 7.4).
Exception 3 – Accidental Movement on Putting Green: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move on the putting green (see Rule 13.1d), no matter how that happens.
Exception 4 – Accidental Movement Anywhere Except on Putting Green While Applying Rule: There is no penalty when the player accidentally causes the ball to move anywhere except on the putting green while taking reasonable actions to:

• Mark the spot of the ball or lift or replace the ball, when allowed to do so (see Rules 14.1 and 14.2),
• Remove a movable obstruction (see Rule 15.2),
• Restore worsened conditions, when allowed to do so (see Rule 8.1d),
• Take relief under a Rule, including in determining whether relief is available under a Rule (such as swinging a club to see if there is interference from a condition), or where to take relief (such as determining the nearest point of complete relief), or
• Measure under a Rule (such as to decide the order of play under Rule 6.4).

Penalty for Playing Incorrectly Substituted Ball or Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Rule 9.4: General Penalty under Rule 6.3b or 14.7a.
If multiple Rule breaches result from a single act or related acts, see Rule 1.3c(4).
 
WHITTAKER'S WINNERS!!
I thought I had  chosen 3 of my favourite items this week but it changed at the eleventh hour because today I discovered something so good that it goes to the top of my list and I can’t wait to go back!

• WT1331  A small Lebanese restaurant that has only been open a few months (next door to Seed) with absolutely the best wraps I have ever eaten. I found it hard to choose as the middle eastern menu was excellent but I settled on the Hummus Wrap, just fabulous! They specialise in Lebanese sweet and savoury flat breads baked in their oven on the premises. Check out their website www.wt1331.com.au. By the way I really loved the look of this little sidewalk gem, so chic!

 

• Harris Farm Market is always a favourite and this is definitely a winner….. Roza’s Basil Pesto.  Honestly you wouldn’t  bother making it yourself as this is so good.  It’s in the refrigerated section just along from the cheeses.   

 

• Aldi is always going to have something good to offer, however this is not in the ‘Isle of Dreams’ but in the liquor section…..  La Mule Rose.  I think you’ll be surprise so stock up for Easter!

It can't be Friday so soon?? Apologies for the lateness of the Blog, but I've just returned from playing the first round of Pennants in Canberra. More on this later....
WE HAVE SOME RUN ON THE COURSE!! HURRAH!!!! Not sure how long the dry weather is meant to last, but isn't it wonderful? Thanks to Matt and his team who do a brilliant job in all conditions.
DON'T FORGET THAT THERE IS NO COMPETITION ON TUESDAY 9TH MARCH AS THE GREENS ARE BEING RENOVATED. Greenkeeper's Revenge on Thursday 11th March.
Just a reminder - please repair your divots - on the fairways, tees and greens.

There were 85 women playing at Bowral GC on Tuesday in the NSW Summer Meeting, and the feedback I received from many of the girls was...

• The course is so pretty and in immaculate condition.
• Thanks to the Bowral girls for playing later in the day, so that the Summer Meeting girls could hit off early.
• Tim and his staff were terrific even though it was very busy - Thanks Tim.

So there we are ..... What a great club we belong to!!

PENNANTS
Today the CSGA Plate Team travelled to Murrumbidgee to play against Federal GC in the first round of the Pennants competition. The Bronze Shield Team travelled to Belconnen to play Queenbeyan. An early start for some of us, and a night in Canberra for others. All girls turned up and played to the best of their ability on the day. However, we were defeated in both teams, but goodness me we looked fantastic - see photos! It's an honour to represent our club.
Thanks to Ginny and Jane for organising us so well and we are only sorry that the results were not better. NEXT WEEK GIRLS!

RULE 6.3
RULE 6.3 refers to Playing the Wrong ball. The penalty is LOSS OF HOLE!
We have a few match play events happening over the coming weeks, so I thought I would post some info regarding Match Play Rules.

RULES FOR MATCH PLAY

• Practice on the course, before a match is permitted.
• The difference in handicaps (THIS IS YOUR DAILY HANDICAP)
  has to be worked out. For example – one person is on a handicap of 30, the other person is on a handicap of 20. The difference is 10. The person on 20 has to GIVE 1 shot on the 10 hardest holes – see Match index on the back of the RED card. The person on 30 GETS 10 shots on the 10 hardest holes. It’s a good idea to mark these holes on your card.
• Who Tees off first? Toss a coin – the lowest handicapper calls. Whoever wins can choose to Tee off first or second.
• Tee off the RED plates. The whole width of the Tee can be used.
• The person who wins the hole tees off first on the next hole. This
  is called ‘having the honour’.
• The person who is furthest from the hole hits first – even on the
  green.
• Once you get to the green, declare the count of shots – eg “I’m 4,
  you’re 3.
• If your opponents’ ball is very close to the hole, you can opt to
  give them a ‘Gimme’. This saves time. Don’t forget to count that
  putt!!
• BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO ‘GIVE’ A PUTT – DEPENDS ON WHERE THEIR BALL IS, AND WHAT THEIR PUTTING IS LIKE! YOU CAN ALSO CONCEDE A HOLE IF YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT YOU CAN SQUARE OR WIN IT.
  SCORING
• + when you win a hole
• - when you lose a hole
• when you square or halve a hole
• The winner is declared when one player has more pluses (+) than
  there are holes left. Eg – You have 3 pluses and you have just
  finished the 16th Hole. So your score is 3 up with 2 to play.
• If you are all square after the 18th, keep going until there is an
  outright winner.
  MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, ENJOY YOUR GAME AND HAVE FUN.

This fun Foursomes competition is on on Tuesday 23rd March. A high handicapper plays with a low handicapper. There is a sheet in the locker room - so if you are interested, please add your name to the list. It's a great way to mix around and play with different people.
