Women's Golf News

Not long to wait now for all the blossoms to appear, the days to be a wee bit warmer, the course a little drier, the Maggies swooping  and bigger fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
Your Committee is always working, on your behalf, to make golf an enjoyable experience. We have noticed that the number of women playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays is substantially less than this time last year. This is, probably, due to the wet weather, the condition of the course and other things cropping up on golf days. Totally understand. However, the course isn't tooooooo bad, and, at least, we can get out on the Temporary Cart Course and have a bit of exercise.

With this in mind, we have come up with an idea that will hopefully wet your appetite for a fun day of golf, socialising with pals, and maybe win some prizes.

RULES
There have been a few queries re taking relief from Temporary Water and GUR and the length of Preferred Lies.
Rule 16 - Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions), Dangerous Animal Condition, Embedded Ball
Purpose of Rule: Rule 16 covers when and how you may take free relief by playing a ball from a different place, such as when you have interference by an abnormal course condition or a dangerous animal condition.

• These conditions are not treated as part of your challenge of playing the course, and you are generally allowed free relief except in a penalty area.
• You normally take relief by dropping a ball in a relief area based on the nearest point of complete relief.

This Rule also covers free relief when your ball is embedded in its own pitch mark in the general area.
16.1  Abnormal Course Conditions (Including Immovable Obstructions)This Rule covers free relief that is allowed from interference by animal holes, ground under repair, immovable obstructions or temporary water.
These are collectively called abnormal course conditions, but each has a separate Definition.
a. When Relief Is AllowedInterference exists when any one of these is true:

• Your ball touches or is in or on an abnormal course condition,
• An abnormal course condition physically interferes with your area of intended stance or area of intended swing, or
• Only when your ball is on the putting green, an abnormal course condition on or off the putting green intervenes on your line of play.

There is no free relief from an abnormal course condition when the abnormal course condition is out of bounds or your ball is in a penalty area.

No Relief When Clearly Unreasonable to Play Your Ball. There is no relief:

• When playing your ball as it lies is clearly unreasonable because of something other than an abnormal course condition (such as, when you are standing on an immovable obstruction but you are unable to make a stroke because of where your ball lies in a bush), or
• When interference exists only because you choose a club, type of stance or swing or direction of play that is clearly unreasonable under the circumstances.

b. Relief for Ball in General AreaIf your ball is in the general area and there is interference by an abnormal course condition on the course, you may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball as shown in Diagram 16.1b below.

DIAGRAM 16.1b: FREE RELIEF FROM ABNORMAL COURSE CONDITION IN GENERAL AREA
Free relief is allowed when the ball is in the general area and there is interference by an abnormal course condition. The nearest point of complete relief should be identified and a ball must be dropped in and come to rest in the relief area. The relief area is one club-length from the reference point, is not nearer to the hole than the reference point and must be in the general area. When taking relief, the player must take complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.

Preferred Lies are only 30cm - our scorecards measure (in width) 15cms.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• LOOM –  This narrow little shop now located in the group of shops just near Raw & Wild is a speciality shop indeed. I’m mentioning it, not for its materials and haberdashery which I’m sure are excellent, but for their simply wonderful expertise in alterations all carried out by seamstresses. About a year ago they moved from the centre of town to this new location. Nothing seems impossible; so get your head around making that dress you never wear into a skirt or have those pants shortened to a new look ‘crop’.
  

 

• SIMON’S MEATS – Now I know you all have missed the Aldi Goose Fat Potatoes and the Woolies Duck Fat Potatoes, which I hope will return to the shelves leading in to Christmas, but despair no more for Simon’s Meats in Springetts Arcade sell a  Duck fat spray.  This is fabulous as it can just be lightly sprayed on potatoes etc to create that wonderful crunch.  Not cheap, about $30 but well worth it.
  

 

• ALDI – A really good thing to stock up on while available are the boxes of Lens Cleaning Wipes.  They are half the price of the other wipes which are in the Pharmacies etc. and don’t often appear at Aldi.  Curiously I  found them amongst the bin bags and cling wrap! They are excellent for cleaning computer screens and the like.

   FOURSOMES ARE SUCH FUN!!

Another Friday, another Blog! Not a great deal of news this week, a lot of people seem to be travelling in search of warmer weather - lucky ducks! We can't wait to explore a bit more of the Australian Outback and see some of the wonderful colours which are such a part of the Australian landscape. Below is a photo from friends who have just completed part of the Larapinta Trail in NT. Those colours!

We have had a fairly dry week and the course seems to be drying out a fraction - there was even a little bit of "run" yesterday - long may it continue.
From tomorrow, Saturday 20th August, we will be back playing 18 holes on the
1 -18 hole courses. Carts are allowed for members only, until Wednesday. So make sure you book in and start practising for the Foursomes Championships, your Match Play games, The Pamela Tallents Trophy Event and the Club Championships which are in October.

It is with regret that I have to inform you that our Handicapper, Noela McMurray has stepped down from her role. Noela has been a terrific asset to the club, and especially to the Women's Match Committee for many, many years.
A huge 'Thank You" Noela for all your hard work, whether it be as handicapper; helping with the new course ratings; working out eclectics and other multi round events, or just giving us wise counsel. We hope to see Noela back on the golf course very soon.

This week we have been playing 9 and 18 hole competitions which has been great. However, from next week, we are back playing 18 holes on our NORMAL courses. At the moment, the 9 hole competitions on Tuesday and Thursdays will cease, but your Match Committee are trying to find alternatives - more women playing golf, the merrier!

It is heartening to see some many of you playing your matches - some on the 18 hole course, some on the Temp Cart Course. From tomorrow, matches will be played on the 18 hole course, using the Universal Match Index on the back of the scorecard.

            A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ON WOMEN'S GOLF

The story goes that the first woman to play golf was Mary, Queen of Scots. There are even reports that Mary was the driving force behind the construction of the St Andrews course in the 16th century. While it would be another 200 years before the first recorded tournament for women was held—in Scotland in 1811—golf would soon become one of the most popular sports for women.

In Australia, news of women playing the game internationally filtered through to local newspapers. Reports published in the gossip pages of The Australaisian in 1887 noted that a ‘ladies’ golf tournament has been held at Elie, Fifeshire’.
But what of the history of women’s golf in Australia? From inter-colonial competitions and Ladies Golf Unions to wresting control from the men and golfing phenomenons, we’ve pulled together a handful of stories from the history of women’s golf that you may not know about.

A hundred years and more of history
According to Marion Stell’s Half the Race, a woman played in a golf match at Moore Park in Sydney in 1884, perhaps the first woman to play the game in Australia. In August 1893, The Argus reported on the ‘first ladies’ golf match ever played in the colony’ in Geelong and stated that ‘in spite of the weather, which was unfavourable to both golf and spectators, there was an excellent attendance’. 
The following year, Geelong would be the site of the first Ladies Golf Championship of Australia.
While strides were taken in the late 1800s, many women were still barred from being full members of clubs, restricted to associate members. They were also often barred from using club facilities and there were only limited times for them to play.

In the early 1900s Ladies Golf Unions launched across the country.
Pioneers in more ways than one.

In August 1897, women golfers in NSW and Victoria played in the first inter-colonial tournament at Bondi. As Stell writes, this match ‘preceded the first intercolonial men’s golf match by several months’.
Throughout the early 1900s, Ladies Golf Unions sprung up across the country. By 1903, the NSW Ladies Golf Union was up and running. Soon after came the Victorian Ladies Golf Union in 1906 and in 1908, the Western Australian Ladies Golf Union.
While at a state level the women organised their game, at a national level men controlled women’s tournaments. At least until 1921 when the Australian Ladies Golf Union was formed which wrested control of women’s tournaments from the men of the Australian Golf Union!

We thank these women for being such wonderful pioneers in the world of golf.

Good Morning to you all. Hopefully we are all feeling slightly fitter after playing a couple of rounds of golf this week?? Doesn't it make a difference to see some blue sky, sunshine and dry weather - long may it continue!

A BIG welcome to two new members - LYNNE HALL from Sydney and
JO GOODACRE from Victoria. Both will be in the clubhouse over the next couple of weeks, so please give them a warm Bowral welcome.

Our wonderful "Getaway Girl" (Ellen Neale) has been dealt a nasty blow this week, with her husband, Dennis, being taken to emergency on Monday night. Dennis had 3 stents put in yesterday, and by all accounts, is doing well. We wish Dennis a very speedy and complete recovery.

Goulburn Golf Club held their Annual Stabrose Event on Wednesday 10th August. It was a fabulous day - those Goulburn Gals certainly know how to put on an event .... and I'm not just talking about the scrumptious morning tea they provide!
There were over 80 women in the field, and we did not have to wait on any hole - pretty remarkable.
Virginia Wozniak, Meeghan Bourne and I had a fun day in the sun, after a very foggy start. The course was relatively dry too. Look out for this day in 2023.

VWGA TOURNAMENT @ BOWRAL .....NEW DATES
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the VWGA Tournament, due to be played in September, is now scheduled for Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th February 2023.

We were very fortunate with the weather yesterday - it meant that a few Trophy Events could be played. These events were:-
Golf NSW Goodwill Plate, 2nd Rd of The McLeish Cup and The Hastings & Meg Clark Trophy Qualifying Round. 20 women played the Temporary Cart Course - and Carts were allowed!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO DI LINDSAY WHO WON THE GNSW GOODWILL PLATE 2022 with a fantastic score of Nett 69.
The Goodwill Plate is run each year, and is a special competition to raise funds for donation to a Charity recommended by the Board of Golf NSW. The women members each pay $2.00 to participate in this event, and the money collected is sent to Golf NSW with the results.

• EBay -  What a fantastic little gadget this is!  It’s a silicone ball marker magnet that can be used on your beanie, hat or any clothing for that matter and there’s no clip required. There are two strong magnets at each end and you simply fold it on to an item and the magnets grab together, then your ball marker grabs on to the outside magnet. Got it!! Google silicone ball magnets and choose your supplier, I used EBay.  They are about $7 each for a pack of two.

• Bunnings – This is a MUST HAVE item that is truly amazing. It’s a grout marker pen that is applied to discoloured grout anywhere. I bought mine at Aldi, typical ! but they sold out quickly, so I Googled them and Bunnings have a Dulux one which is probably even better.  If you Google grout marker pens, Amazon have them in an assortment of colours. What a brilliant invention, no more scrubbing and bleaching.

 

• Mae Hill Farm  - This is an amazing gourmet butcher in Mittagong that is like no other.  A tricky location in Owen Street but that’s just because it’s not in the main drag of shops.  Just look at their website to appreciate their products including their wonderful pre-cooked meals (now I’ve got your attention) and fabulous gourmet sausages.  It’s an experience to say the least. www.maehillfarm.com.au or follow them on Instagram.

RULES
Wrong Ball 6.3c
(1) Making Stroke at Wrong Ball. A player must not make a stroke at a wrong ball. Exception – Ball Moving in Water: There is no penalty if a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball that is moving in water in a penalty area or in temporary water:

• The stroke does not count, and
• The player must correct the mistake under the Rules by playing the right ball from its original spot or by taking relief under the Rules.

Penalty for Playing Wrong Ball in Breach of Rule 6.3c(1): General Penalty. In match play:

• If the player and opponent play each other’s ball during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball gets the general penalty (loss of hole).
• If it is not known which wrong ball was played first, there is no penalty and the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

In stroke play, the player must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the Rules:

• The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count.
• If the player does not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning his or her scorecard, the player is disqualified.

GENERAL PENALTY - LOSS OF HOLE IN MATCH PLAY or TWO PENALTY STROKES IN STROKE PLAY.

Minjee Lee has got off to a great start in the AIG Women's Open @ Muirfield GC in Scotland. She's -3, three off the pace. Hannah Green is Even after the first round and Steph Kyriacou is -1. Go Girls!! It would be wonderful if 2 Aussies could win in Scotland! I can't believe I'm saying that, being a Scot!

I am sure we were all saddened to learn of the resignation of the Assistant Manager, Tim Davis, following his ongoing illness.
Tim was always so approachable and supportive in the planning for our special events. We will miss his smiling presence in the clubhouse, and wish him a speedy and strong recovery.
