Women's Golf News

Our Club Championships was completed on Thursday 22 October.  Weather and course were perfect and the results were very close.  Well done to Virginia Wozniak our new Club Champion, as well as Jan Ferguson and Carole Turpie our Division 2 & Division 3 Champions respectively.  This is the first time each of these players have been successful in this competition so look out for some new names on the Honour Boards.

Club Championship
Virginia Wozniak, our new Club Champion, was very consistent over all three rounds with scores of 91, 91 and 90 for a total gross score of 272.  
Annie Geddes (the defending champion) was runner up with scores of 97, 85 and 95 for a gross score of 277.  After Annie's brilliant 85 in the second round, she and Virginia were level so there was lots of pressure in the final round.

Division 2 Championship
Jan Ferguson was a very deserving winner of the Division 2 Championship.  Leading after the first round with 96 off the stick she followed up with scores or 102 and 101 for a gross score of 299.
Jenny Ogg was also very consistent and a worthy runner up.  Jenny's scores were 100, 97 and 104 for a gross score of 301.

Division 3 Championship
Our Division 3 Champion, Carole Turpie, not only was consistent but managed to improve her score in each round.  Carole achieved scores of 111, 105 and 102 for a gross score of 318.
Jane Whittaker was a very worthy runner up with scores of 109, 104 and 108 for a gross score of 321.

Nett Champion (54 holes)
While we ran a daily competition in conjunction with each of the Championship rounds, there was also an overall Nett Event across all three rounds.
Anne Keys playing off 27 was the winner with nett rounds of 73, 75 and 71.  Anne was always going to be very hard to beat after being this consistent across all three rounds.

Based on recent conversations with members, it seems that many of us only login to book a round of golf.  Next time you login, take the time to explore further as there is a lot of information available to you.

Club Championships R1 - Thursday 15 October
We were lucky with the weather and the course was magnificent for the first round of our Club Championships.  Some great scores from the 44 players reflected the ideal conditions.  Leaders after the first round are:

Division 1 - Virginia Wozniak (13) with 91 off the stick is leading from Pam Barker (18) with 93 and Carole Byrnes (20) with 94.  Hopefully this top form can be maintained over another two rounds.

Division 2 - Jan Ferguson (26) with 96 off the stick is leading from Sue Harrison (23) with 99 and Jenny Ogg (24) with 100.  Jan playing off a handicap of 26 produced the best nett score of the day with a nett 70 in the daily competition.

Division 3 - Jane Whittaker (32) is leading this division with 109 off the stick closely followed by Rosemary Downing (31) and Carole Turpie (31) both with 111.

The details of the first round are displayed in the locker room.  As you are aware R2 is a seeded draw based on the results from R1.  This was loaded on Thursday so just check the system to find your tee time for Tuesday.

Don't forget we would like you to sign your card and put it on the locker room table after you put your score in the system.  At least then, if you forget to hit save because you are so excited about your wonderful score, we have some way of sorting out the problem.

CSGA District Brooch 2020
As you know we played this event in conjunction with our Medal Round on Thursday 17 September.  The results for our three divisional winners Julie Hayden, Wendy Burke and Noela McMurray (who each win a CSGA Ball Marker) were sent off to the CSGA to be compared with scores from other clubs.
I am delighted to advise that Noela McMurray was the overall Division 3 winner.  You may recall that Noela had a blinder on the day with 109 gross and 67 nett.  No player from any other CSGA club could come near.

CSGA Most Improved Junior Girl
Each year the CSGA offer a prize for the most improved junior girl golfer for the year.  There is an award for the junior who has improved her handicap by the most shots and there is an award for the junior who has improved her handicap by the highest percentage over the period 1 January to 31 August 2020.
We have nominated Michelle Di Natale for this event for the past couple of years.  You may remember Michelle won the award for the highest percentage reduction last year.  This year Michelle reduced her GA handicap from 2.2 at the beginning of the year to 0.0 at the end of August.  It was very close and I am pleased to advise that while Michelle did not win this year she was runner up.  What a star!

CSGA Canberra Shield - Thursday 5 November
This annual event is always great fun and a chance to play at a new course.  This year the event will be held at Belconnen - come and see if you can hit the tree in the middle of the first fairway!
We are looking for a team of 8 players - particularly golfers who don't usually play pennants.  The format is match play with full handicap difference.
There is a sign up sheet in the locker room.

Two events were decided with our stroke round on Thursday.  The field of 29 was disappointing, but possibly school holidays were having an impact.  The smaller field did not mean that players did not achieve some spectacular scores.

Marjorie Walker Memorial Rosebowl
This is an annual event for Division 2 players.  The winner this year was Sue Harrison (23) with a fabulous nett 72 score.  Sue will have her name engraved on the trophy and also receive a rose kindly donated by the Mittagong Garden Centre.

CSGA Diabetes Trophy Qualifying
The best three scores across the field qualify to compete for the Diabetes Trophy at the CSGA Opening Day event on Thursday 11 February at Royal Canberra Golf Club.
As you are aware we collect $2 from each of our players and send this off to the CSGA for their official charity whether you played or not.  This year we sent $94 as a donation to Diabetes Australia.

Michelle Di Natale Wins the Liverpool Cup
We have been advised that Michelle has had another win in a major event.  The Liverpool Cup was held on Wednesday 30 September.  It is a Jean Derrin event and as such is open to players with a GA handicap of 14.4 and under. Michelle is currently playing off GA 0.1.  Michelle won the event with an amazing gross score of 76.  Par on this course is 74 and the Scratch Rating is 75.  Well done Michelle!

Goulburn Golf Club Motor Neurone Disease Charity Day
Our friends at Goulburn have advised they will be staging this special charity event on Wednesday 4 November.  The competition will be American Foursomes with a cost of $20 per player - pay on the day.  Please wear blue in support of MND.
There is an entry form in the locker room or you can send your entries direct.  Entries close 27 October.
