Women's Golf News

Well, it's been one of those weeks, where there has been a number of cancellations...... AGAIN!
The Unity Cup, due to be played on Tuesday against Moss Vale GC, has been cancelled yet again. It is very unfortunate that we cannot play these Interclub matches, as it promotes camaraderie amongst the Highland Clubs. Oh well, let's hope 2023 will be drier and Covid-free.

Our Royal Spring Carnival Day was cancelled too - due to wet weather and course conditions. We will save all the prizes and Champagne for Closing Day - so make sure you don't miss out! Put it in your diary - Thursday December 1st.

We have been very lucky to play 5 Medal Rounds this year. There are usually 6 Medal rounds between January and September, but with the atrocious weather, we have not been able to get the last one in. We are not the only club who is having weather issues - Wollongong GC were going to try and play their 3rd Medal Round yesterday!!
There were only 3 contenders for Medal Rd 5 on Tuesday - well done Ellen, Andrea and Jane for bracing the wet conditions.

The above women are eligible to play in The Medal of Medals Event on THURSDAY 10TH NOVEMBER - make sure this date is in your diaries.

The results for The GNSW Medal have been sent to Golf NSW. The winner of the Medal in each division at Club level is the player returning the lowest Nett aggregate of three scores at the end of the six rounds. As you can imagine, this was pretty tricky this year!
The winners were Annie Geddes (Div 1), Jane Clifford (Div 2) and Sonya Bleakley (Div 3).
The three winners will play (if they are able) in the GNSW Medal Playoff @ Federal GC on Thursday 27th October. There were some close results in Div 1 and 2, with only a couple of points between 1st and 2nd places. The GNSW Hat Pins will be presented to the winners at the Annual Meeting on Thursday November 24th.

Please see me if you have not picked up your Medal.

The Women's Championships are fast approaching. The sign-up sheet is in the locker room, so please make sure your name is on there before Thursday 6th October when the draw will be done.
The weather is not looking too bad for the second week - let's keep our fingers crossed!

If your name is not on the attached list, and you would like to play, please contact me and I will add your name to the list.
Once the draw is done, your names will be on the booking sheet for Thursday 13th October.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• Aldi – Well I am very pleased to announce that the Honey Glazed Caramelised Parsnips are now back in stock with the Christmas stock starting to filter through.  Try the Duck Fat Potatoes as well,  perhaps not quite as good as the Goose Fat potatoes from last year but still worth buying for last minute meals.  My advice, STOCK UP on both these items as they do suddenly disappear from the freezer.
  

 

• HFM -  The individual panna cottas are absolutely to die for and are $4 each from the fridge just near the bakery section. Honestly they are the best I’ve  tasted and are totally addictive. Thanks Annie for the tip!

 

• Pet Barn –  Over the past  week I have had the grandchildren to stay plus Molly the Havanese.  The grandchildren have been a breeze, but Molly has suffered extreme stress from the storms, but thank heavens for Pet Barn’s ‘ Lovebites’ B-Calm  heart shaped chews. These work best if given just prior to a thunder storm and they really do work. Look for the tell-tale signs of panting and anxiety!!  I wished I had known about them last Tuesday!
  

The Highlands are busy at the moment so getting anywhere near town  is not easy but there are some great buys now appearing as a prelude to Christmas so stay tuned.

Good Morning Everyone.
A bit of a mixed week on the golf course, but at least it was dry for the most part. The first round of the Mixed Foursomes Championships took place, lots of Match Plays, and some terrific Stableford scores. Well done to all of you who make the journey out to the 5th Hole to play our wonderful game! As someone said in a message to me this week ... "It's just a game of golf and we all love it"! Hear Hear!

What a brilliant job our volunteers do! The lovely native garden near the 6th Tee is looking very smart indeed. THANK YOU BOYS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!

With considerable help from John McGuire, Robert Eriksson, Matt and Adam, we have refurbished and added new natives to the garden next to the 6th tee. I have included a Saint Mary MacKillop shrub in the new plantings to help someone achieve a minor miracle with a hole in one!  If anyone wishes to donate additional native plants, please contact me.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
It's almost that time of year again when we start thinking about the Club Championships. The 1st Round is on Thursday 13th October 2022.
The sign-up sheet is out in the locker room, as the first round is a seeded draw. Please put your names down by Thursday 6th October. The draw will be completed that afternoon, and names will be on the booking sheet on the computer.
The ToC for the Club Championships are on the board, fixtures page and here..
WOMEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022
TERMS OF COMPETITION
The dates for the Club Championships in 2022 are: Round 1: Thursday 13th October
Round 2: Tuesday 18th October
Round 3: Thursday 20th October
EVENT: The Championships will be played over 54 holes (18 holes per day) in 3 Divisions determined by GA Handicaps as follows:
Division 1: 0 - 22.5 Division 2: 22.6 - 30.6 Division 3: 30. 7 – 54.0
ELIGIBILITY: This event is open to all players with a GA Handicap.
Country members may play in the daily events but are not eligible for the Championship or Trophy.
ENTRY:
Entry will be by sign up sheet in the locker room. The draw will take place approximately one week prior to the first round.
Round 1 will be played in divisions by seeded handicap draw in each division. Rounds 2 and 3 will be seeded draws based on the scratch scores from previous rounds.
WINNERS:
THE CLUB CHAMPION IS THE PLAYER WITH THE BEST SCRATCH SCORE OVER 54 HOLES
Division 2 Champion is the player with the best scratch score over 54 holes from that handicap division
Division 3 Champion is the player with the best scratch score over 54 holes from that handicap division
There will be one overall Nett winner, to be decided after the three rounds are played.
A daily Nett event will be held in conjunction, on each of the three championship rounds.
A ball rundown will also be held.
The Champion in each division will receive vouchers for 2 people to attend the Annual Club Presentation Dinner.
Runners Up in each division will receive vouchers for 1 person to attend the Presentation Dinner.

A player who has won a Championship (Gross Event) in any division, is not eligible to win the Overall Nett event.

HANDICAP CHANGES:
Where a player’s handicap changes after the commencement of the Championships, she will continue to play on her original handicap for the duration of the Championships.
Any handicap changes will apply for the Daily Event only.
TIES:
In the event of a tie after the final round is played, in any of the Championship divisions, a playoff to determine the Champion will take place AFTER ALL THE FIELD HAS COMPLETED THE FINAL 18 HOLES. The Playoff will be a “sudden death” playoff on Hole 18 until a result is reached.
The Golf Australia Count Back Method will determine ties in all other events.
DISPUTES:
In the event of a dispute, the matter must be referred to the Match Committee on the day of play, and their decision will be final.
LATE ENTRIES:
Late entries will be accepted after the draw has been announced, but will have to play at the end of the field i.e.after Division 3, or as otherwise agreed by the Match Committee.
Carts may be used if required. No caddies allowed.
Provided the course is open, the event will be played as scheduled.
The competition is conducted under the R & A Rules of Golf.
The Women’s Match committee reserves the right to change the ToC

KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS Some of the events in the Knockout competitions are at the pointy end. Well done to all of you who have played your matches and good luck to those that are still in the running for the various trophies. It has been a bit of a moveable feast with the "play-by" dates, but you have all been very assiduous in making sure your matches are played by the  cut-off dates. Thank You!

• In the Jubilee Foursomes, Pam & Chris play Jill & Wendy before meeting Marg & Annie in the finals
• Jane Clifford meets Leonie Carroll in the finals of The Barbara McCarthy Memorial Trophy
• Di Lindsay plays Jane Whittaker in the finals of The Rosevale Plate
• In The Challenge Bowl, there are still a few matches to be played before the finals need to be played by Sunday 20th November.

MIXED FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIPS
This Sunday (18th September) is the final round of the Mixed Foursomes Championships and Wotton Trophy. Even though the field is small, there is a certain amount of competitive spirit being shown!
The Championship is the best SCRATCH score over 36 holes
The Wotton Trophy is the best HANDICAPPED score (NETT) over 36 holes.
History.
The Club Mixed Foursomes Championship was first played in 1980 with winners recorded on the Honour Board. The first winners were P K Douglas and Mrs D Missingham.
The Club Mixed Foursomes Handicap originated in 1993 with the winners awarded the Wotton Trophy which had been donated by Mr and Mrs R K Wotton. The first winners were P K Douglas and Mrs D Missingham.

Woke up to drizzly rain this morning, and the terribly sad news that The Queen had died overnight. The weather certainly suited most people's mood, I believe. She was, indeed, a bastion of continuance that settled a lot of people .. May She rest in Peace.

There have been quite a few Knockout matches played this week - well done everyone for making such an effort in finalising these before the cutoff date - 2nd Rounds to be played by Sunday 25th September. Unfortunately, someone has to be the loser - but, by all accounts ,all the matches were very close - so well done to everyone.
Please check the Knockout Schedule on the Noticeboard for Round 3 dates, and good luck to all who are still competing in The Challenge Bowl, Hastings & Meg Clark Trophy, Rosevale Plate, Barbara McCarthy Memorial Trophy & Jubilee Foursomes - a lot of trophies to play for!

The Greenstaff and volunteers have been extremely buy this week mowing, burning-off, making the 11th Tee look very neat and tidy, and painting stakes. A HUGE thank you to you all. Also a big thank you to Penny Mckenna in helping to "invigorate" the Planter Boxes on the verandah.
The big machinery that they have had to use, has certainly made for some interesting shots and lies - I really didn't want to give Jane Clifford free relief from this.....!!!!!!!
Sandy Short, great to see you back on the course Sandy, was extremely happy to be trudging through the mud to the 10th!! Thank God for a sense of humour!!!!

NEW LOCAL RULE E-4
Ground Under Repair (GUR) due to Drainage Works
The GUR is defined by:
1. Any area encircled by a white line or roped off area
2. Earthworks, wheel tracks and/or crawler tracks
In proceeding under this Temporary Local Rule, the player must follow the procedures outlined under Rule 16.

The Mixed Foursomes Championships will take place over 36 holes. Round 1 will be played on Sunday 11th September, Round 2 on 18th September. It is still not too late to enter this Major Championship Event - contact the Pro Shop, and put your names down!

It was great to see the first Newsletter from The Board, and well done to our Women's President, Sue Flaxman, in getting this off the ground.

As you may have seen from the notice in the Locker Room, The Pamela Tallents Trophy is now on Tuesday 15th November - it will be a lovely Summer's Day and the 18 Hole GA course will be open and dry. Finger's crossed!
The Unity Cup against Moss Vale is on Tuesday 4th October - sign-up sheet for this is in the Locker Room - WE NEED AT LEAST 4 PAIRS!

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• Mittagong garden Centre –  It’s starting to feel just a little like we may be getting some long awaited Spring weather, well almost, and there’s nothing like a trip to your local nursery to see all the wonderful Spring plants.  My absolute favourite is the Pierus which are available in a couple of different varieties. The flowers are just gorgeous and, being evergreen, they have something to show you each season.  The pendulous bell shaped flowers in Spring last for ages when cut, so buy a plant now and get totally hooked like I am! They love being under a deciduous tree.
  
• Another favourite of mine and just about everyone else is Daphne.  Now we can enjoy a new variety called Princess Daphne which, believe it or not, thrives in full sun and is a late bloomer so we can enjoy flowers well into Spring. It was a bit hard to get at first but now is in most nurseries.  My suggestion is that you buy some of these plants now for Christmas gifts as they will not mind being in their container and by December they won’t be easy to find.
  

 

• Aldi -  Now I know for a fact that quite a few of us like a drop or two of Pinot Noir and I’m one that has been sticking to a few favourites, AND BRAVO Aldi has come to the aid of the party! I decided to try their Pinot Noir, namely their New Zealand one, KAIORA BAY, and I was very pleasantly surprised. So go on Jenny O, Sonya and Chris L, give it a go and anyone else that feels the urge and at $15 a bottle it’s definitely worth a try.  Let me know what you think, I’m impressed!
  

 

• Aldi – Now back to the basics, this Saturday 10th,  Aldi have cleaning products on their Special Buys and, apart from their stick vacuum which I refuse to queue up for, they have their Hand Held Steamer on special  (I already have one) and really they are great at $29.99.  I use mine for cleaning the bathroom, spot cleaning the carpet and spot cleaning the sofas.  It has been an excellent buy so add it to your list.

What an exciting week of golf we have had, and what a wonderful finish yesterday!
Huge congratulations to all those pairs that participated in this prestigious Trophy Event for 2022.
The Division 3 Foursomes Championship was decided at the end of 36 holes - WELL DONE PAT DONOGHUE & SHARON ROWE who are the Div 3 Champions.
The Division 2 Foursomes Championship was decided after 37 holes - a Playoff between Sue Flaxman & Jane Clifford, and Ellen Goodwin & Sue Harrison. It was such a close finish, with a great putt from Sue Harrison just not quite reaching the hole - it was a matter of millimetres!! JANE CLIFFORD & SUE FLAXMAN are the Div 2 Champions.
The Division 1 Foursomes Championship was also decided in a Playoff after 38 holes!! The Playoff was between Marg Horwitz & Chris Hill and Chris Levy & Annie Geddes.
A terrible shank from yours truly put us way out of contention!
MARGARET HORWTZ & CHRIS HILL are the Div 1 Champions.
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!!

The start of the day was pretty ordinary - walking to the 5th, we were all thinking ...Really, do we have to do this???? However, after the 6th hole, the sun came out and we peeled off our wet weather gear - Thank goodness!!

PENNANTS 2023
The Match Committee are working out which Pennant teams we will field next year. There has been good response so far for The Plate Team and the Bronze Shield Team. If you did not play this year, and would like to play in 2023, please contact Suzanne Ayre (Plate hcp 12-23), or Jane Clifford (Bronze hcp 18-36) asap.
There is also The Brindabella Shield (hcp 0-45) which is played on Sundays, this competition could suit those women who work during the week. If you are interested, please contact me.
The Whitehorse Cup - Men's Pennant Competition, also played on Sundays, are now welcoming women into the competition. Dave Burgess, Club Captain, would be very interested to know if there are any women out there who would be keen to play in a mixed Pennant Team. Please contact me and I will relay the info to Dave - sounds like a bit of fun!!!!!! The Whitehorse Cup is played at courses in the Illawarra Region, whereas, the other Pennants are played in the CSGA Region - mainly Canberra.
Pennant Matches are heaps of fun, and it is a terrific way of playing at some fantastic courses. COME ON, JOIN UP!!!!!
