Friday morning again - and it's almost the end of June. Hello all, hope you are in good spirits with the sun shining where you are?
It's lovely to hear of everyone's travels, whether here in Oz or overseas - I have got itchy feet - how about you?
The fields on Tuesday and Thursday are slowly increasing which is good to see. The course, even though it's drying out quite nicely, is still boggy in parts. Pam Barker can attest to this fact, after her little bit of "wheel spinning" yesterday!!
It seemed to be a day of a few mishaps - lots of lost balls, embedded balls and even buggies having a mind of their own, and almost ending up in the pond on the 13th Hole - no names, no pack drills!!

The Pamela Tallents Trophy is happening next month. It will be a similar format to last year's event, except we will have a mini shotgun start on Thursday 21st July. This means that everyone is in at roughly the same time to enjoy lunch, presentation and a talk from Mittagong Physiotherapy - thanks Ellen Neale for facilitating this.
Make sure your name is on the sign up sheet. Our captains for this year are Jane Whittaker and Jan Tuite

RULES
There has been a lot of chat about taking relief if your ball is not found in an abnormal course condition. Please refer to Rule 16.1e
Rule 16.1e Relief for Ball Not Found but in or on Abnormal Course Condition
If a player’s ball has not been found and it is known or virtually certain that the ball came to rest in or on an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may use this relief option instead of taking stroke-and-distance relief:

• The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b, c or d, using the estimated point where the ball last crossed the edge of the abnormal course condition on the course as the spot of the ball for purposes of finding the nearest point of complete relief.
• Once the player puts another ball in play to take relief in this way:
  • The original ball is no longer in play and must not be played.This is true even if it is then found on the course before the end of the three-minute search time (see Rule 6.3b)

It was a pretty heavy frost on Tuesday morning, but 20 fabulous women ventured out, rugged up with beanies, gloves and hand warmers! By the end of the first 9, we were taking off layers! In fact, I ended up playing with only 2 layers on, when my hardy friend - Leonie Carroll still had on 3!! Unheard of in the women's circle!!
The temporary Cart Course has been terrific - a huge thank you to the boys and Dad's Army.
HOWEVER ...... from tomorrow, Saturday 18th June, we will be back playing on our normal 18 hole course. So next Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd will be on the normal 18 hole course - SEE YOU ON THE 1ST!
Next week's events will NOT be handicapped - the rough still needs some work.

What a lovely Meet & Greet session we had last night. So good to see so many members and prospective NEW members.
We had a very informative talk from Dave Burgess re the new drainage solutions - thanks Dave - let's hope it all works out as planned.

On Monday 20th June, Virginia and I will be taking the NEWBIES out for a "Walk the Course" session. Please meet at the Pro Shop at 10.15am. We will only be walking the 1st and 18th, talking about Penalty Areas, Tee Boxes, Etiquette on Greens etc.

SLOW PLAY
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!
In this cold weather, the last thing we want to do is stand around waiting to hit our balls, either off the tees or on the fairways. PLEASE adhere to our Slow Play policy - keep up with the group in front.
Golf's New Rules: Major Changes USGA
New Rule: Rule 5.6 encourages prompt pace of play by recommending that:

• Players should recognize that their pace of play affects others and they should play promptly throughout the round (such as by preparing in advance for each stroke and moving promptly between strokes and in going to the next tee),
• A player should make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds (and usually in less time) after the player is able to play without interference or distraction, and
• Committees should adopt a Pace of Play Policy

In addition, Rule 6.4 expressly allows playing out of turn in match play by agreement, and for stroke play, affirmatively allows and encourages players to play out of turn in a safe and responsible way to save time or for convenience (also known as “ready golf”).

Reasons for Change:

By giving players affirmative guidance, support and encouragement on prompt play, these Rule changes help in:

• Setting expectations for both beginners and experienced players on what types of behavior are considered prompt play, including the maximum amount of time it should normally take to make a stroke, and
• Encouraging players to play faster by confirming that it is proper to play out of turn in stroke play when it is safe and responsible to do so (that is, to play “ready golf”).

Whittaker's Winners
Well it’s a real mixed bag of things for the Winner this week and well may you laugh! It feels so good to know there is golf back on the agenda, and I know we are all looking forward to some exercise and social contact.
 
Down to business….

• Woolworths -  I was very surprised to hear that very few of you have heard of Lup Chong.  Being a Melbourne girl by birth we were brought up on Chinese food on Sunday nights with and entrée or two  of Lup Chong. It’s a Chinese sausage but like no other!  It has multiple uses but it’s commonly served as an entrée with chopped shallots and Soy Sauce. Don’t expect to find it on menus in NSW -  but don’t ask me why! Make sure you cut it thinly and on the bias. Luckily for me and hopefully you, you can buy it in the International section at Woolies and probably Coles. It’s sometimes unavailable but it always reappears.  Add it to fried rice or an omelette for example, but it’s just wonderful as an entrée. Yes I know it’s probably not that good for you but just occasionally we need to lash out! It needs to be heated through very well, until it becomes translucent.  It really is fabulous.

 

• HEM – Oh my goodness what a beautiful shop, and luckily for all of us they stock ‘Johnny Was’.  Now I know we are not talking bargains here but think of it this way……I have just saved a lot of money by not having a sentimental chair reupholstered.  I have deliberated over this chair, as it is not entirely my scene, but as I said it has sentimental value to me.  Fortunately I held off reupholstering it and bought a Johnny Was Blanket that is so stunning I just want to sit in the chair all day.  It’s in a luxurious reversible velvet with two totally different looks.  I’m currently displaying the winter look! Our own Di Lindsay will help you choose, she is a style queen!

 

• Pillow Talk -  This shop always seems to have such hidden gems. I have recently replaced any of my cushions that had polyester inserts with feather ones.  These inserts, sold separately, are hard to find. The cushions will no longer slide down the sofas, but will  sit snuggly on them, particularly the leather sofas.   They will look so much more inviting, especially with the dip strategically placed in the centre!

What troopers these girls were on Tuesday. I believe they just had a bash around a couple of holes and then ran into the clubhouse for a well-earned coffee ...... and maybe a wee dram?? Although this wind is very annoying for all, it certainly is a godsend for the golf courses all over NSW. There has been little rain this week, so our course is enjoying some reprieve, and Matt and his team are able to get out their big machines and start mowing - HURRAH!!!!
As mentioned in the email from Kevin this morning, events will not be handicapped until Saturday 18th June. However, our GNSW Bowl - 4BBB and the qualifying round for the Barbara McCarthy & Rosevale Plate will go ahead next week as scheduled.
We will be playing the 9 hole Cart Course twice - so an 18 hole competition. There will be a 9 hole comp also for those who do not want to play 18 holes.
You will have noticed that the Indices on some holes are a bit erratic, and do not adhere to our normal Red Course Index. KK and Dave Burgess worked very hard to organise a temporary cart course for us which then had to be verified by GNSW and MiClub. So, let's play our golf and enjoy the extra shots we get on some holes!!

A couple of us went to Goulburn on Wednesday for their Invitation Day. It was, as you can imagine very, very cold, but the course was dry and, of course, the welcome morning tea was of the usual amazing standard! None of our girls performed brilliantly, but our "surrogate" member, Alison Mooney, and her partner, Ann Ridley came 2nd overall. Well done!

Our Pennant Teams are celebrating with a lunch on Friday 24th June. We look forward to saying a big Thank You to all the women who travelled to Canberra week after week to represent Bowral Golf Course. We may not have come home with any trophies, but the spirit and friendships that ensued made it all worthwhile.
I'd like to thank the Captains - Suzanne Ayre and Jane Clifford for organising their teams and to all the team members for being part of TEAM BOWRAL!!

Last week we learned of the death of Ellen Goodwin’s partner, Keith, following a long illness.
The Committee has sent flowers to Ellen on behalf of BGC women golfers, together with our condolences and best wishes.
May he rest in peace.

Only one competition took place this week, but some girls managed some terrific scores in the wind and cold. 16 gals braved the wintry conditions.

The Physios will be talking about Golf Fitness and How to Avoid Injuries - not to be missed! MEN ARE ALSO INVITED TO THE TALK!

As Dave has mentioned in his Blog, we have a new Trophy for 2022 - The Country Member Trophy. A beautiful Silver Bowl has been kindly donated, and the event will be played at the same time as The Lifestyle Cup - Men & Women.

The Bowral Golf Carts are not quite as luxurious as The Queen's Golf Cart that she travelled in at the recent Chelsea Flower Show, but it will be great to see the Green Machines back on the course ...... on the NEW CART PATHS of course!!!

Well done to Matt Morris, his team, and Dad's Army for completing the new 9-Hole Cart course in record time. The 9-Hole course is, as Dave Burgess has mentioned, Holes 5,6,7,10,11,12,13,14 & 15.
This course will now be our 9-Hole course, taking over from the Dry Red Course that we have been playing over the last couple of weeks.
Please use the path on the left-hand side of the 1st, and follow this around to the 5th Hole - an easy 10 minute stroll on the new road base.
Next week we will still be playing a 9 - Hole competition.

It has been a windy old week, but thankfully, not too much rain. The course is a little drier, as quite a few women found out on Thursday. Hopefully most of the wet weather is behind us and we can start playing 18 holes again.

Unfortunately, The Bowral/Goulburn Shield was cancelled today, due to the course conditions. The 12 girls who were in the team were all looking forward to playing 18 holes on a "dry" course ..... but c'est la vie!! We will reschedule the match for later in the year - at Bowral.

It was a brisk start to the day, but we all soon warmed up with the glorious sunshine on our backs.

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• Picton Bowling Club  -  A really easy drive from Bowral, about 35 mins and what a super menu!  A blackboard ‘specials of the day’ menu, plus the two regular menus.   The dining area is bright with a view over the bowling green and the seating very comfortable.  The best part about this was the food, it was fabulous. I had the ‘blackboard’ fish, delicious.
  

 

• Les Gourmandises – This is a relatively new patisserie to Bong Bong Street and I must admit I hadn’t seen it until a couple of days ago.  It’s not far from our forever favourite Gumnut Patisserie but further along, opposite Barbara’s Storehouse.  Now, if clientele are anything to go buy it must be good as it was ‘jumping’ at 4.30pm with people collecting their orders.  Everything looked  so French. I must say it’s not cheap, but OMG I bet you have to buy something! I left with some crème brulee which was utterly delicious.
  

 
 

• Aldi – Now back to business!   The ski gear is due in soon and this is the time we buy the Merino thermals and the wool ski socks which are perfect for winter golf, not too thick, but very warm. Also about this time the ¼ zip Merino sweaters.  For those of us that get cold hands - the hand warmers should also appear soon.  Keep an eye out as by the time these things are advertised you don’t get much notice from me, as Saturdays seem to be the main event. Early July is the most likely time to get these items.
