Women's Golf News

Very sadly, we had to cancel our Championships for 2022. It certainly isn't the first time this has occurred, but still very disappointing. There appears to be quite a few clubs in Sydney and Canberra who are in the same position. Really, 2022 has been a woeful year for so many people.

On a happier note, due to the cancellation of our championships, 3 women were able to travel to Federal Golf Club yesterday to play in the GNSW Medal Playoffs for 2021/22. Jane Clifford, Ellen Goodwin and myself had a lovely day out, but, unfortunately did not achieve brilliant results!!
Thanks to Federal GC and the CSGA , especially Barb Clayton and Sally Boundy, for organising a terrific day.
Federal Golf Course was looking spectacular as can be seen in the photos below. Spot the Kangaroos in the lush grass!!

Next Thursday 8 Bowral women will take part in the Canberra Shield @ Royal Canberra Golf Club.

NOTICE FROM SUE FLAXMAN - WOMEN'S PRESIDENT
The Women Golfers’ Annual Meeting and Trophy Presentation will be held on Thursday 24 November, commencing at 2 pm after golf. Meeting documents and call for nominations have been sent out by the Secretary. I would like to encourage members with an interest in joining the Women’s Committee to put their names forward for a position, whether experienced or a novice.
A week later, on Thursday 1 December, we are hopeful of having a fun Closing Day – rain or shine! More information about this day will be forthcoming.

I especially like the mint green or plain white ones.  So get one of each to ensure free delivery, which by the way, is quick and very reliable.
  

 

• PETER ALEXANDER –  I know I’ve mentioned before the silk pillowcase as a great gift for the ‘hard to buy for’ family member or friend, but what I didn’t tell you is that Peter Alexander in Bong Bong Street (opposite The Gumnut Patisserie) sell the best ones ever.  They are the Mulberry Silk Pillowcase which are beautifully boxed and they will also gift wrap if required.  Both sides of the pillow case is silk which is so important! At $99.95 I think they are gorgeous. My suggestion is the Snow White one.   Don’t forget to buy a colour coordinated card.

We have had a few sunny days in the Highlands over the past week, which has seen the course dry out a bit, mowers whirring along, grass on shoes, not mud, and a few happier faces!!
Because of this unusual event, Knockout matches have been played thick and fast - HUGE THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR MAKING THE TIME AND PUTTING IN THE EFFORT TO GET THESE EVENTS COMPLETED!

There were 3 finals played BARBARA McCARTHY TROPHY, ROSEVALE PLATE & JUBILEE FOURSOMES.

BARBARA McCARTHY TROPHY
8 women qualified for this event on Thursday 16th June. They were:-
Jane Clifford, Ellen Goodwin, Wendy Burke, Jill Scott, Leonie Carroll, Marg Anthony, Pam Barker & Jan Tuite.
The final, which was held yesterday was between Jane and Leonie. Jane won 5/3.
CONGRATULATIONS JANE - WINNER OF THE BARBARA McCARTHY TROPHY 2022!

ROSEVALE PLATE
The qualifying round for this event was also played on Thursday 16th June. The qualifiers were:
Di Lindsay, Barb Mead, Jane Whittaker, Sharon Rowe & Penny McKenna.
The final was played on Wednesday 19th October between Di and Jane. Di won, 2Up.
CONGRATULATIONS DI - WINNER OF THE ROSEVALE PLATE 2022!

JUBILEE FOURSOMES
The qualifying round for The Jubilee Foursomes was held on 24th February! (It was actually a DRY month, can you remember??).
The 8 pairs who qualified that day, 8 months ago, were:-
Leonie Poulton & Jill Malone, Pam Barker & Chris Hill, Wendy Burke & Jill Scott, Carol Warner & Shirley Brereton, Marg Horwitz & Annie Geddes, Di Lindsay & Jan Ferguson, Sue Flaxman & Jane Clifford and Judy Windybank & Maggie McKenzie.
The final, played yesterday was between Wendy & Jill and Marg & Annie. Wendy & Jill won 4/2.
CONGRATULATIONS WENDY AND JILL IN WINNING THE JUBILEE FOURSOMES 2022!

A huge THANK YOU must go out to Matt, and all the groundstaff for working so tirelessly in trying to get the course ready for the Men's and Women's Championships. The Women's Championships are due to begin next Tuesday, 25th October - your Match Committee will make a decision on Monday as to whether they will go ahead or not. STAY TUNED!!
The Men's Championships, due to start tomorrow, have been postponed, along with the other Trophy events that were scheduled. These Trophy events, including The Women's Lifestyle Trophy will be played on the 12th November. Sally-Anne Ferguson & Emma Fernandez will be contesting this trophy for 2022. Good Luck girls!!

WHAT'S COMING UP?
Mmmmmm - well this is all in the lap of the Gods!
Hopefully we will play Rounds 1 & 2 of our Club Championships on Tuesday and Thursday. However, the weather is not looking really brilliant for next week.
We will make a decision on Monday as to whether or not we play the 2022 Championships. If the Championships cannot be played on the 1-18 GA course, with carts allowed, then we will have to re-think the situation.
As The Championships are such an inportant event in our calendar, we are very mindful of treating them with the outmost respect, and allowing EVERYONE a chance to compete.
I will email you all on Monday, after the Match Committee have met.

Thursday 10th November - Stroke. Medal of Medals/Prosper Ellis Salver. If you have won a Club Medal this year, you are eligible to win The Medal of Medals - a very prestigious Honour Board Event.
Tuesday 15th November - 4BBB v Stableford

I listened to Richard Fidler this morning interviewing Andrew Greig, who experienced a "Near Death" experience whilst climbing the Himalayas. He lives, for 6 months of the year on Scotland's Orkney Islands. 
He is an author and poet, and a golfer! His book, PREFERRED LIES, sounds fascinating, and I can't wait to read it. Here's a brief description.....or you might want to listen to the Podcast - Conversations with Richard Fidler.

Surely golf is a game for posh people, country clubs and networking businessmen, for unfortunate sweaters, politics and trousers?

Andrew Greig grew up in Scotland, where playing golf is as natural as breathing. He sees the game as the great leveller, and has played on the Old course at St Andrews as well as on the miners' courses of Yorkshire.
He writes about the different cultural manifestations of the game, the history, the geography, the different social meanings, as well as the subjective experience, the reflections between shots.
He plays alone, with friends and brothers, with ghosts.
He is looking for the essence of golf, the pure heart of it, which can be found, Andrew Greig believes, on the free 9 hole course on North Ronaldsay.
Mountaineer, novelist and poet Greig (In Another Light, 2004, etc.) examines life and golf.The sport conjures up a great many images, most involving upper-crust aristocracy, private clubs and affluent practitioners. The author, a proud Scot and on-and-off golfer, argues that it is actually remarkably universal: a game for men and women, for blue-collar workers as well as executives, for those who enjoy the beauty of somewhat overgrown nature as well as those who prefer well-manicured greens. Recovering from brain surgery, Greig approached the links to meditate on a variety of issues, most relating, perhaps not unexpectedly, to mortality. He took the opportunity to visit 18 golf courses in his native Scotland, from the northern point of the Orkney Islands to the celebrated greens of St. Andrews. Along the way, he ruminates on issues relating to the game and to life in general. The attempt to quantify the success of a round of golf with a scorecard can artificially taint and ruin a perfectly valid pursuit, he declares. A lopsided scorecard cruelly shows one player failing to measure up to a superior; declining scores suggest age and his mortality. Greig's self-consciousness about his game also leads him to question his preference for playing alone as a means of avoiding the frustrations of competing. He eventually learns that company does not necessarily require competition and comes to enjoy fellowship on the course. He explores with great vulnerability and openness his relationships with his friends, brothers, father and wife. A portrait emerges of a man by no means perfect, but in many ways complete. A lyrical and moving meditation.

Two very hardy players in the field yesterday! Andrea Tomlin looked the part in her shiny red wellies, and Carol Warner taking a very tentative step over the "creek" beside the 11th tee!! Good on you girls for braving the pretty soggy course!

I think even the ducks and the little ducklings have had enough of this wet weather. It's good to see that Mr Fox has not attacked the many little families living on the course. Bravo Mum and Dad Duck - you've done a terrific job in keeping your young ones safe.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
24 women have put their names forward to play in the Club Championships. The numbers are a little down on last year, which is disappointing although totally understandable.
We have had to change the dates due to course conditions, wet weather predictions and no carts allowed.
The new dates are:-
Round 1 - Tuesday 25th October
Round 2 - Thursday 27th October
Round 3 - Thursday 3rd November.
If you have not put your name down, and would like to play, please put your names down at the end of the field. Could you please advise me as to whether you are available for all 3 rounds, if you are a late entry.
Unfortunately, a couple of these dates corresponded with CSGA events. Your committee put a great deal of thought into our decision as to when to hold the championships - it was not an easy task. It also meant that some women are now not available to play in the Championships, but on the other hand, it allowed others to play.

KNOCKOUT MATCHES
We are all hoping that we can get to play our matches before the Annual Meeting on November 24th. It is a very difficult task in getting them all played; but if you see an opening in the weather, and your opponent is willing, please grab the opportunity!

WHITTAKER'S WINNERS

• Near & Far:  I know how hard it gets to buy for the men in our lives but don’t despair, as this lovely shop in Bong Bong Street has some great gift ideas.  The Happy Socks at $20 each are fun and would cheer up any pair of feet. Designed in Switzerland and made in Turkey how could a man not like them!!   Then there are the gorgeous La Boucle Belts designed in  Belgium and will fit just about any man with their stretchable woven fabric and leather trim.  The colours are great too, and, at $99.95 make a very clever gift idea especially for golfers.

 

• Suzie Anderson Home:  I know we all know where this beautiful homeware and lifestyle store is,  but for the men who may read this who don’t know,  it is at 409 Argyle Street, Moss Vale, or in Dirty Janes in Bowral.  Any man could step foot in this store and would leave with a very lovely gift for their loved one.  My recommendation is a bottle of perfume and I would be guided by the expertise of the very helpful staff. These perfumes/fragrances are unique and do take the time to read about their origin as it’s fascinating,  especially the Eight & Bob range.  Average price around $250. 

 

• Woolworths/HFM:  This is not as exciting as the above mentioned gifts but it is something that you all should try before saying it looks too fatty, because it’s not!  It is Streaky Bacon but do buy a good brand.  Once you have tried it I’d be very surprised if you reverted back to your Middle Rashers!  I first had it in Canada and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s especially good dry baked in the oven on foil.  The fat just disappears, well almost, and you are left with a really crispy delicious strip of bacon.  It’s also excellent in salads as its very crunchy. I recommend the wood smoked D’ORSOGNA brand.

I noticed on the Captain's Blog this week, that there is a sign-up sheet for The White Horse Cup - 2023.
The Golf Illawarra Handicap Pennants competition is now open to women, so, if you are keen to play in this mixed Pennant Team, please pop your name down on the sheet on the Noticeboard in the Club House (the main one, not the Women's) by Friday 18th November.
The matches are played on Sundays, and will start in February/March 2023.

There has been a little bit of sunshine today and a few happy gusts of wind - enough to dry out the course a bit??? Mmmmm?

It's not a very happy moment, when you receive an email from BGC saying the course is closed! It is closed until Monday 10th October, after that; there will be another assessment. So we wait with bated breath to see if our first round of the Championships will be played next Thursday 13th October.
Your Match Committee will discuss the issue on Monday and you will all be advised as to the decision. There are 26 women down to play next Thursday - good luck everyone!
Remember last year? Final day of the Championships, it was warm and sunny and you were all standing on the verandah cheering on the Champions - maybe we will get a break this year?????? Let's be positive!!

The Canberra Shield is coming up - Thursday 3rd November. There will be a sign-up sheet in the locker room for those who would like to play in this prestigious event at Royal Canberra Golf Course. We need a team of 8 players.
This event was first played in 1990 and a Trophy was donated by Emily Hurt from Federal Golf Club

The spirit of the competition is that, where possible, an opportunity is provided to players who would not have usually had the opportunity to play pennants.
