Where was this weather yesterday?? Hopefully, the blue skies and soft breeze will continue, so the course can dry out and we can reach the greens in regulation! Wouldn't that be nice?
Talking of shooting the greens - I was fortunate to referee the Division 1 Champion of Champions on Tuesday. It was such a joy to watch good golfers swing beautifully and make pars and birdies so easily. A lot to learn!! More on this later...

Yesterday, 25th Feb, was the Jubilee Foursomes Qualifying Round. 44 women had entered and the mood on the 1st Tee was one of excitement and positivity. Little did we know that in an hour's time, the heavens would open, fork lightening would light up the skies, and thunder rumble ominously around us. I think I speak for all the girls out on the course .... it was very scary!
Luckily, with the help of Faye Frith and her cart, Jan Deane in another cart, we managed to get everyone and their stranded buggies and bags in safely. Thank you to all of you who remained in excellent spirits throughout the ordeal - I have never seen so many wet golf shoes in the locker room!!
Thanks also to Darryl who was very concerned about our welfare. He had a lot of work to do afterwards cleaning buggies and bags!

LIGHTNING RISK WARNING
 
At any time when there is storm activity nearby there is a significant risk of being struck by lightning. Bowral Golf Club has adopted a policy common to many golf clubs in that it is the responsibility of each player to check weather forecasts before playing at Bowral Golf Club. Due to the unpredictability of lightning strikes it is not possible to determine when players are at risk. The Club will not be liable for death or injury by lightning by attempting to forecast it. Players should seek shelter inside an enclosed building without delay if there is a risk. As a general advice places and things to avoid include:-
 

• small structures or sheds
• open fields
• in close proximity to the tallest localised structure (eg surveillance tower, tree, light pole, antenna)
• umbrellas
• swimming pools, lakes, dams or water generally

Persons should also refrain from holding or contacting metal objects or using devices connected to electrical or phone lines.

BERRIMA DISTRICT INTER CLUB DAY
48 players turned up on Tuesday 23rd February to play in our Fun Day. This is an annual event, this year hosted by BGC. We had 14 players from Moss Vale and 8 players from Highlands - a great roll up. The teams started at 8.30am in a shotgun start and there were some terrific scores. It was a 3 Ball Team Event - 2 scores to count in a multiplier.
At 9.00am the two divisions of the Champion of Champions were ready to hit off on the 1st Tee.
Division 1 was being contested by Jocelyn Mackay (MV) and Debbie Finlaison (H). Unfortunately, Bowral Champ - Virginia Wozniak, was unable to play due to a back injury.
Division 2 was being contested by Chris Norrie (MV), Wendy Thomson (H) and Jan Ferguson (B).
The Champion of Div 1 was Debbie Finlaison with 78 off the stick! Congratulations!
The Champion of Div 2 was Wendy Thomson. The 3 girls in Div 2 played amazing golf and at the 18th Hole there was only 2 points between Chris, Wendy and Jan. Chris and Wendy were on equal points, so off they went for another 4 holes in the playoff. Wendy was declared the winner on the second 18th!
Our Jan did BGC proud - thanks for being such a good sport Jan!

The winners in the 3 Ball Team Event were - Mary Werfel (MV), Julie Jeffery (B) and Leonie Poulton (B). Each won $50 gift voucher.

NTP (2nd Shot) on 6th was won by Wendy Burke, Carole Byrnes and Sarah Hawthorn (MV)
NTP on 14th was won by Janet Dunn, Pat Donoghue and Heather Dunlop (H).

DAILY RESULTS
On Saturday 20th February, 13 women played in a Single Par Event.
The winner was Ellen Neale with -2 (C/B). R/U - Chris Levy  -2
NTP (2nd Shot) on 15th - Jill Scott.

SUMMER MEETING
Next Monday 1st March through to Thursday 4th March, the Southern Highlands are hosting the Summer Meeting. Four Bowral women are playing in it. They are - Jane Clifford, Pam Barker, Chris Hill and Sue Flaxman. Good luck girls!
Due to the Summer Meeting being played at Bowral on Tuesday 2nd March, we have a late start for our competition. There are a few names down already - we mighty find it a bit different playing in the afternoon!

As mentioned in my email to you all last night, the Jubilee Foursomes will now take place on TUESDAY 16TH MARCH. The timesheet is open for you to put your names down.

There were a couple of things that I forgot to add to my previous blog today. Here they are....

RULES
A new Local Rule was brought in on Wednesday 24th February....
Bowral Golf Club Local Rule F - 5
Immovable Obstructions near the Putting Green.FORM
Relief from interference by an immovable obstruction may be taken under Rule 16.1. 
The player also has the extra option to take relief when such immovable obstructions are close to the putting green and on the line of play: 
Ball in General Area. The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b if an immovable obstruction is:

• On the line of play, and is:
  •  Within two club-lengths of the putting green, and 
  • Within two club-lengths of the ball. 

Exception - No Relief If Line of Play Clearly Unreasonable. There is no relief under this Local Rule if the player chooses a line of play that is clearly unreasonable.
Penalty for playing the ball from a wrong place in breach of  Local Rule: General Penalty under rule 14.7a.

A really brilliant idea for your reading glasses and sunnies.  Great colours and seriously soft leather with a zip each end, so clever.  Even a side zip for a mask! • Harris Farm Market gets a mention this week because I’ve discovered the most delicious accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee….Pistachio Amaretti. Try and stop at one!  Just opposite the bakery section.
  
• If you haven’t already tried it the Cedar Creek apple juice is outstanding and made locally, well nearly.  I have only ever found it at HFM and Woolworths.  It’s clear, not cloudy and so pure.

Friday morning, and it’s still raining! What a wet summer we have had. We shouldn’t complain though, as this time last year, the course, and the rest of Australia, was in desperate need of rain. BUT…. What a great job Matt Morris, our head Greenkeeper, does in all weather situations. Thank you Matt!
The course was a picture yesterday, albeit pretty wet on 13th and 15th holes. I think even the ducks are getting a bit over the water situation….

We were very lucky to play our first Medal Round yesterday in near perfect conditions. There were some great scores – obviously those girls did not find the puddles! More about the results later.
Now that we are back to Pre-Covid conditions, can I urge you to check your scores with your markers, and SIGN YOUR CARDS – BOTH PLAYER AND MARKER. Once your score has been entered into the computer and placed in the slot next to the computer in clubhouse, or handed to Pro Shop staff, the scorecard cannot be altered.

It is also very important to keep your score accurately and that of the person you are marking. If you are new to golf, you can purchase counting beads - see picture.


We are fortunate to have preferred lies at the moment, however, it's important to follow the Rules of Golf when marking, lifting and cleaning your ball.The following is an extract from the R and A Rules of Golf Rule 14 - Lifting and Returning a Ball to Play
Before lifting your ball under a Rule requiring it to be replaced on its original spot, you must mark the spot, which means to:

• Place a ball-marker right behind or right next to your ball, or
• Hold a club on the ground right behind or right next to your ball.

If you lift your ball without marking its spot, mark its spot in a wrong way or make a stroke with a ball-marker left in place, you get one penalty stroke.
When you lift your ball to take relief under a Rule, you are not required to mark the spot.

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN THIS WEEK AND WHO WENT...
On Tuesday, 3 of our girls played at Highlands GC in an Invitation Day. Ellen Goodwin, Jane Clifford and Wilma Lung were the lucky 3 to score an invitation.
Wilma did very well, her team coming 3rd, and winning a ball. Well done!
On Wednesday, 4 BGC girls (Ellen Goodwin, Pam Barker, Leonie Poulton and myself) travelled to Goulburn for their Open Day. A great day of golf and camaraderie was had by all. No big prize winners on the day unfortunately!!

BERRIMA DISTRICT INTERCLUB EVENT - 23RD FEBRUARY
Looking forward to next Tuesday when BGC host this annual event.
26 Bowral girls are playing, 14 girls from Moss Vale and 8 from Highlands. It's a fun team event for the field - Best 2 Stableford Scores - Multiplier.
The Champion of Champions is also played on the day - 3 X Div 1, and 3 X Div 2.
Div 1 players are Virginia Wozniak, Jocelyn Mackay and Debbie Finlaison
Div 2 players are Jan Ferguson, Chris Norrie and Wendy Thomson.
We wish all players good golfing, but a special shout out to Ginny and Jan!!

PENNANTS
Well the pennant season is almost upon us. Our first matches are on Friday 5th March. There has been such a great response - thank you all.
Ginny organised a fantastic Clinic yesterday afternoon with Kevin Kenny. Thanks to Kevin we can now get out of bunkers, chip onto the green and know exactly where our ball is going to land, and putt straight into the hole!!!!! Brilliant!! Look out Canberra!!
Here are the girls .... Ginny called them "A Bevy of Beauties", but maybe they could be called Gin and Jane's Gorgeous Golfing Gals"!! We are going to look good in our new pennant shirts anyway!

CSGA Plate - Ginny Wozniak, Julie Hayden, NEtti Buchanan, Leonie Poulton, Annie Geddes.
Bronze Shield - Pam Barker, Clare Stanham, Chris Evans, Jane Clifford, Jane Kilmister.

We had our first presentation in a while yesterday - thank you all for staying! It was good to all get together at last. Roll on the next one!

DAILY COMPETITIONS
Saturday 13th Feb - a very wet day, 7 girls started and only 1 completed the round! Well done Lyn Solness scoring 27 points.
Tuesday 16th Feb - another very damp day, but some nice scores posted. Susan Harrison won with 34 pts, with Sue Cseuz the R/U on 28 pts. NTP on 11th was won by Robbie McGinnes.
Thursday 18th Feb - Club Medal Rd 1 and president's Cup Rd 1. Division 1 Nett and Scratch winner  - Julie Hayden (93/78). Division 2 Nett and Scratch winner - Judy Windybank (100/76). Division 3 Nett winner - Sandy Short (115/81). Sharon Rowe was Div 3 Scratch winner.
The Pro Pin was won by Jane Kilmister - great shot Jane and a great pot ..$80.00!!

I am writing this on Thursday evening, having just come back from a terrific and successful day at Royal Canberra Golf Club. Congratulations to our very own Barb Clayton for organising such a wonderful tournament. Barb is the joint Tournament Director with Sally Boundy at the CSGA. More about the day later.
We have a few new women members at Bowral and they are all keen as mustard. I took three of them out to do 4 holes on Wednesday afternoon which was just lovely - welcome Fiona MacLeod, Deborah Blanckenberg and Robyn Foster. Robyn is keen to play in the field on Tuesdays - so please introduce yourself if you see any of them around.

CSGA OPENING DAY
Well Canberra really put on the works today! Beautiful sunshine and a nice cool breeze were the perfect conditions for some of our girls who travelled down for the Opening Day. I believe there were approximately 125 girls playing today, and it all ran very smoothly. Great effort!
5 girls from Bowral competed, and Suzanne Ayre and I were caddies. Virginia Wozniak was competing in the Champion of Champions, Leonie Poulton was competing in the Diabetes Trophy, Barb Clayton, Pam Barker and Ellen Goodwin were playing in the field.
Ginny played her little (BIG) heart out today. Having never played the course before, she did find a few trees!! HOWEVER - she recovered brilliantly. Her opposition were young guns from Canberra, but Ginny was not fazed. A few pars, a birdie and she was on her way to seriously competing for the title. Young gun Taylor Ellems played a sensational round and posted a score of 84 Gross. Not far behind was "OLD GUN" Ginny posting a fabulous 89 Gross. Taylor won the Champion of Champions, but "OUR GINNY" was R/U!! Ginny also was Nett winner in Division 1. WELL DONE GINNY!!!
Our very own Jane Kilmister - another "Young Gun" won the All Divisions NTP on 17th Hole. This is a fantastic effort by one of our up and coming stars! Jane had never played at RCGC, but after the match, she said to me that she loved it. It was quite a nostalgic trip for Jane, as her grandparents lived next to the course until a few years ago. When she was young Jane used to walk on the course, and think - wouldn't it be lovely if I could play here one day! Well she has, and she played beautifully. WELL DONE JANE!!!
One other winner on the day was Leonie Poulton, who won a major raffle prize.
GREAT WORK EVERYONE!

DAILY COMPETITIONS
Saturday 6th February - only 2 women braved the nasty wet conditions. Pam Barker was the winner and Helen Chadwick was the R/U. Good on ya girls!
Tuesday 9th Feb 40 women played in the fun game of Canadian Foursomes. There were some fantastic scores on the day, with Marg Horwitz and Leonie Poulton combining beautifully to score 72 Nett. Close on their heels were Virginia Wozniak and Suzanne Ayre with 73 Nett.
Barb Mead and Clare Stanham won the D&P on 4th - good job!
Today - Thursday 11th Feb - Well done Judy Windybank winning the day with a whopping 38 pts! R/U was Robbie McGinnes posting a terrific 36pts! Clare Stanham and Chris Levy also score well.

• Don’t miss the Aldi Asian Fried Onions this week.  They have so many uses but especially  great sprinkled  on or in soups and stir fries.
• An Aldi regular item I just love, is the ‘Indulge’ Belgium chocolate ice-cream.  It is often out of stock and I know why,  it’s to die for! 
• Just one more winner…the Persian style Feta Dip is perfect for tiny pastry shells topped with a little smoked salmon …delicious!

It has been a fairly quiet week on the golf course, with the course being closed on Tuesday and wet conditions on Saturday. However 41 players were obviously eager to play yesterday in the Donkin Cup! It was a beautiful day, and even with the wet conditions underfoot, there were still some good scores on the day.

Let's hope the rain has gone and all our balls fly and land near the pin!!

DONKIN CUP
As mentioned above, 41 players played in the 1st Round of the Donkin Cup yesterday. The scores were pretty good considering the conditions.
Sue Flaxman was the winner in Division 1 with 33pts, closely followed by Chris Hill (R/U) on 32pts. In Division 2 - Penny McKenna posted a lovely 32pts, with Prue Taylor the R/U on 29pts. Well done girls!
Welcome back Prue!
2nd Shot on 15th  - Division 1 winner - Judy Windybank. No-one in Div 2.
The 2nd Round of the Donkin Cup is on Thursday 26th August.

PRE-COVID RULES
As of 1st February, we are now back playing "Pre-Covid Golf. Flagsticks can be removed, rakes are back in bunkers, bubblers are working and ball-washers are in use.
The Pro Pin, NTP, D&P are also allowed. The Match Committee decided to re-introduce the Pro Pin on Thursdays.
We now swap our scorecards, so please make sure that there are 2 signatures on each card - Marker and Player. When you have entered your score into the computer, could you please put your cards into the slot next to the computer in the clubhouse. If you enter your score into the computer in the Pro Shop, please hand your signed card to the Pro Shop staff.

PENNANTS
Virginia and Jane have been working very hard behind the scenes to ensure that our pennant teams are up to date with draws, pools, regulations etc.
At the CSGA District Captain's meeting on Monday, it was decided to have only one pool in the CSGA Plate - 9 teams, 8 matches. The Bronze Shield team has not been affected. Thanks again to all the girls who have put their names down to play.
The first matches for both teams are on Friday 5th March. The CSGA Plate play at Murrumbidgee and the Bronze Shield team play at Belconnen. Go Bowral!!

PLAYERS AWARD
The CSGA District Players Award competition for 2021 is open for registrations. This competition is designed to promote participation in District Events and encourages women golfers at all levels to participate in CSGA events and club Open Days.

A change to the Terms of the Competition relate to the maximum daily handicap for determining the winners. To ensure consistency across all eligible events, players in Club Open Days that allow a daily handicap up to 54 will have the scores adjusted to reflect a maximum daily handicap of 45. As per the change made in 2020, points will no longer be awarded for attendance at eligible events.
Registration is free. Players who register before the end of February will have attendance at February events included in their results. Instructions on how to register for the competition are outlined in the ToC's (below). Players can also register at the CSGA Opening Day on 11 February.

BERRIMA DISTRICT INTERCLUB EVENT ON 23RD FEBRUARY
Make sure this day is in your diaries! We will play an 18 hole, 3 person team event, shotgun start @ 8.30am. The draw will be done (and put onto the computer) on 16th February, so please put your names down on the sheet in the locker room.
The Champion of Champions is also played on this day.
