Golf is like life - it's voluntary - You choose to live, You choose to play golf. Thank goodness you do!
It's a game of honesty and integrity and teaches us humility. What other sport do you call out your own penalty, and then add extra strokes to your score??
We play in the rain, the heat, the freezing winds - and still come back the next week for more - good on you!!
A few of our women members have been "missing in action" from golf recently due to a variety of circumstances.
Anne Vitou is in hospital with pneumonia, Meeghan Bourne is recovering from a hip replacement, and Jan Deane has fractured her wrist. Sue Olson is recovering from 2 hip replacements - she is doing amazingly well.
We wish them all a very speedy recovery, and hope to see them back at golf very soon.
RULES
Do hope you are enjoying the Rules Quiz on the back of the loo doors? They certainly make you think, don't they? Thanks Virginia for this initiative.
Due to the amount of temporary water on the course, the following rule applies when you are taking relief - especially on the 13th and 16th Holes.
Rule 16.1 - Abnormal Course Conditions
Purpose: Rule 16 covers when and how the player may take free relief by playing a ball from a different place, such as when there is interference by an abnormal course condition or a dangerous animal condition.
- These conditions are not treated as part of the challenge of playing the course, and free relief is generally allowed except in a penalty area.
- The player normally takes relief by dropping a ball in a relief area based on the nearest point of complete relief.
Abnormal Course Conditions are any of these four defined conditions:
- Animal Hole,
- Ground Under Repair,
- Immovable Obstruction, or
- Temporary Water
- Reference Point: The nearest point of complete relief in the general area.
- Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits:
- Limits on Location of Relief Area:
- Must be in the general area,
- Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
- There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.
Free relief is allowed when the ball is in the general area and there is interference by an abnormal course condition. The nearest point of complete relief should be identified and a ball must be dropped in and come to rest in the relief area. The relief area is one club-length from the reference point, is not nearer to the hole than the reference point and must be in the general area. When taking relief, the player must take complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.

Irish Golf Championships
Milo and Stosh are standing on the 18th tee at their Irish Country Club.
They are the final twosome in the Irish Country Club Championship and are tied for the lead.
The 18th hole is a beautiful par four with a deep valley, descending down to a dogleg right.
Both Milo and Stosh hit long, straight tee shots which disappear down into the valley.
A short time later, the fore caddie appears at the top of the hill and announces that both balls are within 6 inches of each other but there's a problem.
Both of the golf balls are Titleist # 4s.
Milo and Stosh look at each other and realize that they had not informed each other as to what kind of ball they were playing, nor its number.
They quickly descend into the valley.
Sure enough, their two Titleist golf balls are right next to each at the bottom of the valley in the middle of the fairway.
Stosh looks at Milo and says,
"We had better get a ruling from a tournament official to straighten this out.
This is the Irish Country Club Championships and we don't want to be disqualified for making a mistake and hitting the wrong ball.
After all, we are tied for the lead.”
What would your ruling be?
Soon after, a rules official appears and examines the two # 4 Titleist golf balls.
He then looks up at Milo and Stosh and says, "Which one of you is playing the orange ball?
